Today’s song is from the 1952 film ‘Aandhiyaan’.

The early part of the 1950s was a turbulent period for the Hindi film industry. A wholesale, but silent change was taking pace. Though the exchange of film fraternity from India to Pakistan and vice versa had slowed down, the vacancies created by the exit of actors, directors and composers were getting filled up fast. At the same time, the older generation of artistes was slowly fading out, giving way to the artists of the newer generation.

3500 – a good number to be. It is divisible by 7. Gives us 500.

Lets take a stock of the major numbers.

We complete 3500 days – unbroken sequence (almost 😉 ).
500 weeks.
14,000+ songs.

And, for the ticker watchers, we are just going to touch 10,100,000 visits to this blog.

In terms of artist stats, some very interesting total numbers,

486 – Music Directors + 109 posts with [*Unattributed] MD status
659 – Lyricists + 402 posts with [*Unattributed] Lyricist status
870 – Singers + 93 posts with unidentified singer names

Keeping out the unattributed and the unidentified, we are managing a whopping total of 2015 unique artists

I have written this phrase before. Our blog is history in the making – history of Hindi film music – one song at a time.

The film that is reaching its Yippeee station today is the 1952 film ‘Anjaam’. A journey that started for this film a little over seven years ago – on 1st Jan, 2011. Just out of curiosity, I checked the list of posts for the songs posted on that date, I find that none of the songs on that day were new year songs. My curiosity heightened, I checked the previous new year days and the ones after this date. I find that on our blog, the tradition of new year songs starts with 1st Jan, 2012. Prior to that, on the three new years that came, we did not specifically have any new year songs. But that is a curiosity, to be handled in another post.

Yesterday (23rd Jan) was the passing away anniversary of Shankar Dasgupta. A talented singer of repute in the industry, he may not have been in the same league as the top rung singers. But in the next supporting row, his capabilities and effectiveness has been judged a notch better than contemporaries like GM Durrani, SD Batish and Khan Mastana.

Born in 1927, sadly not too many details are available about his early growing years. He had a deep seated interest in music right from childhood, a trait that his mother recognized and encouraged him to follow his interests. From the age of eight years itself, the young Shankar started formal training and practice of classical music.

ना ये चाँद होगा

ना तारे रहेंगे
मगर हम हमेशा तुम्हारे रहेंगे

A promise of a voice, that continues to remind, of a feeling, of a little tangy flavored honey, slipping down the taste buds in the rear of the tongue. A voice that is sweet, that is humble. It may haunt you, but it will never come to you as an onslsught; it surely will over power your heart, but more in the manner of a polite request saying “Naa Jaao Sainyaan Chhuda Ke Bainyaan. . .”.

चाँदनी रातें प्यार की बातें

खो गई जाने कहाँ

That is the very first introduction to this extremely versatile actress of the Hindi cinema. The song was played in the weekly Chitrahaar program one evening. And the kid me was soaking in the performance with an open mouth and extreme ignorance of the emotions being dealt with. The primeval image carried in was that of a serious actress given over to sad roles and sad songs. Little did I know that I couldn’t have more further from reality.

Remembering Geeta Bali, the actress extraordinaire, on the anniversary of her passing away (21st Jan).

Today is 3 january 2018 and we are into the early days of 2018. This is that time of the year when most people feel extremely resolutionary (not to be confused with revolutionary). One regular of our blog commented in our whatsapp group that it is not safe to go on morning walk in these early days of the year as the streets would be full of this highly resolutionary early morning walkers. It is however expected that things would be back to normal after the first week. 🙂

Unlike many who keep away till midnight on new year eve, I went to bed early and when I woke up on first january 2018, it was 5:45. It was late by my standards, but I realised that there was no electricity. The state Electricity Board was letting people in my locality down for the second morning in a week. Previous morning was a sunday, but this first day of the year was a working day.
