Today’s song is from a Mythological film-Devyani-1952.

This was the story of Kach and Devyani from Mahabharat. I like the various stories from our Epics Ramayan and Mahabharat. There are hundreds of subplots and stories in both these Holy books, in addition to the main stories. However, I like stories from the Mahabharat more than Ramayan. The reason is stories from Ramayana are simpler and involve good virtues like Love, Cooperation, Loyalty, truthfulness etc etc. These are desirable but have no links to today’s social structure. The stories from Mahabharat are built around the practical difficulties in day to day life, defeat of the evil at any cost and use of tact, diplomacy, revenge, punishment etc etc which are more interesting to read.

Today’s song is from the film Do Raaha-1952, about which not much is known- except whatever is given in the HFGK.The film was made under the banner of ‘Progressive Pictures,Bombay’. It was directed by Bal Chhabra and was produced by his elder brother Sujit Chhabra under their own banner. The cast of the film was Nalini Jayawant, Shekhar, K N Singh, Agha, Dewan Sharara, Jagdish Sethi and many more. The 8 songs of this film were written by Prem Dhawan-6 songs and one each by Sahir Ludhianvi and Josh Malihabadi. It seems, there was one more song ” Sab paise ki hai maya” sung by Shankar Dasgupta, S D Batish and Prem Dhawan. The song was also recorded but not included in the film. The music was by Anil Biswas.

A rare and opportune gathering of talented stars, singers, music makers and writers once came together at the coordinates of a place called Bombay (now Mumbai).  Fortune has a timing of its own, and blessed are those who witnessed this gathering, and also those who continue to enjoy their creations and their histrionics. An august assembly that pulled together in 1940s, it continued gathering momentum along with the fervor of the newly independent India.
