Filmistan Studio was formed by Shashadhar Mukherjee, Ashok Kumar, Rai Bahadur Chunnilal and Gyan Mukherjee in 1943 after they left Bombay Talkies due to differences with Devika Rani. She had taken over the charge of the Bombay Talkies after the death of her husband, Himanshu Rai in 1940. ‘Chal Chal Re Naujawaan’ (1944) was Filmistan’s maiden film. ‘Love And Murder’ (1966) was an obscure film which I came to know very recently due to its couple of pleasing dance songs composed by O P Nayyar. The film was produced by B K Adarsh under his banner, Adarshlok and was directed by Raja Paranjpe. The cast included Ramesh Deo, Jaymala in lead roles, supported by Prithviraj Kapoor, Heeralal, P Kailash, Helen, Kammo, Chandrakant, Asit Sen, Edwina etc. One of the features of this film’s marketing was that the publicity posters of the film contained only the name of producer, director and the music director. The names of even the main actors were not mentioned.

Today (1 March 2025) is the 83rd birthday of Indrani Mukherjee (born on March 01, 1942). I have watched some of her 1960s’ films mostly having pious and graceful roles. She was born in Allahabad (now Prayagraj) in a Bengali Brahmin family. Her father was a doctor and her mother, a housewife. She did her early schooling in Allahabad and completed her high school studies in Kolkata. From her childhood, she was interested in Hindi films.

#The Decade of Sixties – 1961 – 1970 #
———————————————————————

Today’s song is from the 1962 movie ‘Rashtraveer Shivajee’. I had come across this song recently when I was presenting patriotic songs during Republic Day celebrations. I was looking for songs that praise our national heroes, freedom fighters, and the many unsung heroes who fought the battle for freedom. Before the Britishers our country was invaded by various alien rulers. These rulers tried to dominate the native people by crossing all limits of cruelty, killing them, making them slaves, by converting their faith and religion. However, from time to time there have been courageous and brave sons and daughters of this land who fought to protect the native people of this country. They included rulers from various regions as well as people like Shivaji who created their own kingdom- or ‘Hindavee Swaraajya’ and gave fierce fights to rulers like Moghuls.

‘Senapati’ (1961) was produced by Jai Gopal Mohla under the banner Mohla Films and was directed by Kedar Kapoor. The star cast included Prithviraj Kapoor, Nalini Jaywant, Amarnath, Veena, K N Singh, Tiwari, Helen, Durga Khote, Chaman Puri, Heera Sawant, Rajan Kapoor, Janakidas, Jeevan Kala, Madhumati etc. I heard the name of the producer, J G Mohla for the first time. Before this film, he had produced ’Insaan’ (1952) and ‘Ehsaan’ (1954). After ‘Senapati’ (1961), he seems to have vanished from Hindi films. But when I saw the name of Madan Mohla as the Associate Producer of this film, it gave me a hint of some connection with J G Mohla. Madan Mohla is a familiar name because of some of his box office hit films like ‘Sharafat’ (1972), ‘Raja Jani’ (1974), ‘Dus Numbri’ (1976) etc. The online search revealed that Madan Mohla was the son of Jai Gopal Mohla (J G Mohla). Incidentally, Madan Mohla was also the assistant director under director Kedar Kapoor for this film.
