Sharaafat’ was directed by Asit Sen for ‘Seven Arts Pictures, Bombay’. It had Ashok Kumar, Dharmendra, Hema Malini, Soniya Sahni, Jagdeep, Abhi Bhattacharya, Kanhaiyalal, Sapru, Shabnam, Zebunnisa, Roopesh Kumar, Indrani Mukherji, Sundar, Niranjan Sharma, Poornima, Paro Devi, Jankidas, Brahm Bharadwaj, Chandrima Bhaduri, Kundan, Kesho Rana, Mohan Choti, Birbal, Tun Tun, Raj Kishore, Ajay Kashmiri, Prakash Mishra, Machhar, Dilip Dutt, Ratan Gaurang, Wajid Khan, Ravikant, Shefali, Bilkis, Jagdish Bhalla and many others.
The story of the movie is:
Chanda (Hema Malini) is a beautiful and intelligent woman who, despite her charm and talents, is trapped in the life of a courtesan—a tawaif. Her life is one of public glamour but private loneliness, shaped by circumstances beyond her control. She is well aware of society’s hypocrisy—how the same men who visit her at night shun her in daylight.
Rajesh (Dharmendra) is a young, idealistic professor with a strong moral compass. He is disillusioned with the decaying values of society and the corruption that pervades even the so-called “decent” circles. His encounter with Chanda begins when she gatecrashes a respectable social event, challenging societal norms and sparking outrage among the so-called elite.
Initially, Rajesh is shocked by Chanda’s audacity, but he soon realizes that she is intelligent, dignified, and far more honest than the “respectable” people around him. Intrigued and sympathetic, Rajesh decides to help Chanda rehabilitate and live a life away from the courtesan culture. In doing so, he faces backlash from society, his professional circles, and even his own conscience.
As Rajesh and Chanda grow closer, their relationship becomes a mirror to society’s double standards—where a woman’s worth is judged not by her character but by her social status. The film explores whether Chanda can ever truly escape the stigma of her past and whether society is capable of embracing a woman who refuses to conform.
A parallel subplot involves a judge (Ashok Kumar), who plays a key role in helping both Rajesh and Chanda understand the broader forces of justice, morality, and redemption. The film culminates in a moral victory where inner dignity triumphs over societal scorn, though not without emotional costs.
Coming to today’s song, “Jeevan Daata Jagat Pita Tum” is not just a bhajan in the film – it’s a soul-searching moment of prayer, protest, and penitence. It encapsulates the moral and emotional core of Sharafat, highlighting the disconnect between human judgment and divine justice. Its power lies in its simplicity, humility, and the haunting sincerity of Lata Ji’s voice.
This song gently critiques self-righteousness. While society is quick to categorize people into good or bad based on appearance or background, the song reminds us that real justice lies with God – a force that sees deeper than labels and reputations. The lyrics urge humility, compassion, and surrender to divine wisdom over societal arrogance. Hope you will enjoy this song.
