Rafi Sb – In The Seventies – 5
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
(1973 – Solo)
Seventies was the decade of change, from the very subtle to sweeping transformations. The stars of the sky since 1950s, started to age and lose their glow and popularity. A new crop of youngsters was taking their place. Fortunes were changing, and so was the face of Hindi film music. Through the 50s and 60s, if Johnny Walker was in a film, then it was almost certain he would have a song. ‘Anand’ (1971) changed that. Issabhai Suratwala, the middle aged theatre company owner, went through this poignant tale with a role that had no opportunities for a song. Then, the number of Shammi Kapoor starrers as a hero began to fade. By the time ‘Manoranjan’ (1974) was released, Shammi was now a ‘fat’ character actor. Although still retaining the twinkle, the smile and the crack of humor, the appearance of a bulky posture and a accentuating beard was really a far cry from ‘Yahoo’. And the most significant departure came when in 1971, ‘Jaane Anajaane’ was released. The solo “Jaane Anjaane Log Miley, Par Koi Milaa Na Apna” performed by Shammi on screen carried the playback voice of Kishore Kumar. I remember now, in the ‘Filmfare’ magazine, a photo was published of the recording, showing Kishore Kumar and Shammi Kapoor, with the caption – ‘Shammi with his new ghost voice’. At that time, I did not understand the meaning of these words, as I do now.

As mentioned earlier, I am at present in a district in Chhattisgarh that shares the same name as the advanced nation of Korea, but unlike the land of Samsung and Hyundai, I find my internet connection crawling at a pace where it is unlikely that I can even open a page, let alone watch/download videos. So I will have to try and post songs whose drafts are already there with me in the blog.
