“Agni Rekha”(1973) was produced by K S Melwani and directed by Mahesh Kaul for Mel-Kaul Films. The movie had Sanjeev Kumar, Sharada(known in South Indian film Industry as Urvashi Sharada), Bindu, Helen, Durga Khote, Asrani, Sajjan, Jankidas, Yashodhara Katju, Suresh Chatwal, Chand Usmani, Kumud Tripathi, Lalita Kumari, Harindranath Chattopadhyay, Pal Mahendra, Radheyshyam, Chandrima Bhaduri, Indrani Mukherjee etc in it.

Today (6 november 2014) is the 29th death anniversary of Sanjeev Kumar (9 july 1938- 6 november 1985). It is difficult to believe that he was only in his 40s when he passed away. and it is just as difficult to believe that 29 years have passed since then.

In a movie world where leading actors were so conscious of their image and would stick to them for much of their career, Sanjeev Kumar was an exception who would play all kinds of roles and would get accepted in all of them. He played husband of Jaya Bhaduri in one movie and her father in law in another. He played roles of old man when he was in his 30s, and he in fact played father of an actor who was older than him ! Yes, Sanjeev Kumar played father of Shashi Kapoor (born 18 march 1938) in “Trishul” (1978).

Had Sanjeev Kumar played roles in “English” movies then I have no doubt that he would have won many Oscars for his acting. He confined himself to Hindi movies, where he won Filmfare award-for Aandhi(1975) and Arjun Pandit(1976), as well as National Award for the best actor-For Koshish(1972).

Here is a song from “Agni Rekha” (1973) as a tribute to Sanjeev Kumar. This song is sung by Rafi and Lata. Kavi Pradeep is the lyricist.Music is composed by Kalyanji Anandji.

The song is picturised on Sanjeev Kumar and Urvashi Sharda.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Prakashchandra.

main iss paar tu uss paar
kyaa apni taqdeer hai ae
dukh na karo ..ooo
tumhaari hoon main
alag bhale hi shareer hai ae

main iss paar tu uss paar
main iss paar

dekh rahaa aa
door se main
dekh rahaa aa aa
door se main
maun tapasyaa yeh teri eeee
maun tapasyaa yeh teri
bhoolo isse
bhaagya mein thhi
agni pareekshaa yeh meri..ee…ee ee
agni pareekshaa yeh meri

apne hi ghar hai
tu mehmaan
apne hi ghar hai
tu mehmaan
kyaa maathhe ki lakeer hai ae
dukh na karo …oooo
tumhaari hoon main
alag bhale hi shareer hai ae

main iss paar tu uss paar
main iss paar

sapne tere ae
sapne mere ae
sapne tere ae ae
sapne mere
bol ye kiss din khilenge ae ae
bol ye kiss din khilenge
yeh toh janam beet gayaa
agley janam mein milenge ae ae ae
agley janam mein milenge

apne liye hi vidhi ne rachi ee ee
apne liye hi
vidhi ne rachi
kyun aisi tasveer hai ae
dukh na karo
tumhaari hoon main
alag bhale hi shareer hai ae

main iss paar tu uss paar
main iss paar

Alcohol and lack of exercise proved his downfall. He got carried away by the razzmatazz of the filmi duniya.
Sangharsh me Dilip ki chhutti kar di thhi. He had very clean action even in songs serenading the heroines. His dialogue delivery is still emulated.
