Gulzar, a name that will bring to mind poems and songs of unsullied beauty and edifying simplicity. A play on words that sound commonplace, and yet the meaning and the message they carry are so profound and endearing, that can make emotions swell in the heart. Be it the perky “Mora Gora Ang Layi Le” from film ‘Bandini’ (1963), or the poingnant “Koi Hota Jisko Apna Hum Apna Keh Letey Yaaro” from ‘Mere Apne’ (1971), or the spirited “Huzoor Is Qadar Bhi Na Itthlaa Ke Chaliye” from ‘Maasoom’ (1983), or even the belligerent “Chhod Aaye Hum Wo Galiyaan” from ‘Maachis’ (1996). The spectrum of sentiments is captured fully, across the emotions as well as across the decades, something that speaks volumes of the talent of this wonderful poet. Words are all powerful and the sentiments involved in songs can influence its listeners immensely. Dimple Kapadia made her debut in 1973 with “Bobby”. The success of this movie should have seen her landing many assignments and launch her career. Instead, she got married to Rajesh Khanna, and she was lost to Bollywood.

Kishore Kumar has sung lots of songs that could be described as happy, romantic, comedy, sad etc. But there was one category of song where Kishore has not figured too many times. And this is the category of ghazal.
Here is a song that could be called a ghazal. If it is not so, plese correct me. This is a Kishore Kumar solo song, and quite a nice song. Yes, it is picturised on Rajesh Khanna. How did you guess that ?

We have seen how true blue shayars like Hasrat Jaipuri, Majrooh etc could come up with funny lyrics leading to some great fun songs. Here we see Javed Akhtar, scriptwriter turned shayar, emulating his illustrious predecessors. Here lyrics are written in a common real life language, and not in the usual high sounding words. This was one of the first such songs as far as I can recall.
This song is preceded by some great funny scenes in the movie involving the hero and the heroine, and the fun continues in this song, when the two go to attend a wedding party.

Bappi Lahiri is widely held responsible for the deterioration in the quality of Bollywood music in 1980s. But that is not now how he started his career. He had begun with some nice music in Zakhmee and Chalte Chalte. He was getting nowhere with good music, but when he gave chaalu music, he was instantly successful, and that made him cynical enough to decide that he needed to put crass commercialisation above classy music to forge ahead in his career.
But Bappi Lahiri was capable of giving good music and he would often surprise fans by coming up with great music in the midst of shrill and plagiarised disco songs.
