15 august 1947 and 26 january 1950 are popularly regarded as two important days in the history of modern India. India got freedom from British rule on 15 august 1947 whereas India became a republic on 26 january 1950.

There were two more days in India that have escaped the attention of people, but they have had equally profound effect on India.

Cannot believe that we have reached the milestone of 15k on the blog. Just seems like yesterday that we were all waiting with bated breath to reach the 10k milestone. How time flies, and how consistent and persistent all of you have been. No words to express each one of your dedication, passion and labour of love.

Founders of Infosys (who started their venture reportedly on a Rs 10K seed capital) may not have imagined where their efforts will lead to, one day. Apple company, which started their journey from a garage, may not have guessed how big they will grow one day.  Atul Ji when he single-handedly started this blog (with moral encouragement from friends like Raja Ji – as I understand & others who showed thumbs up at that time) may not have had an idea how far the journey will progress.

A someone who has written so many articles on HFM in the blog, people may believe that I have watched lots of movies. That is not true. Out of all the thirty odd posters in the blog, I may have watched the least number of movies. 🙂

Hullo to all in Atuldom

Same dates, last month, was a period of hectic activity. I believe pre-wedding period is the time when no one should check their BP. 🙂 I am often asked these days how does it feel after all the activity? Have you relaxed enough? Have you come to terms with the fact that your daughter is now married?

Phew!!! So many questions. Thinking of the last question- I don’t feel the difference; possibly because my daughter was already living away from home, due to her work, for almost 4 years now. She herself might answer like me. And to top it there is no custom of a “BIDAAI” in South Indian marriages, what we do is accompany the girl to her sasural and help her set-up home if she needs help in setting up. Also, in these modern ages when we are connected on an hourly basis through the various communication channels at our disposal, the feeling of the “daughter having got married” will never sink-in. The only complaint, well not exactly a complaint, is that after preparing for almost 4-5 months for the big day, it has come and gone and it is almost a month to the date.

na tu zameen ke liye hai na aasmaan ke liye
tera wajood hai sirf dastaan ke liye

palat ke su-e-chaman dekhne se kya hogaa
wo shaakh hi na rahi jo thhi aashiyaan ke liye

garaz paarast jahaan mein wafaa talaash na kar
ye shai bani hai kisi dusre jahan ke liye

Thus wrote Sahir Ludhianvi for the film ‘Daastaan’ (1972). Here he takes a cue from Allama Iqbal who said ….

na tu zameen ke liye hai na aasmaan ke liye
jahaan hai tere liye tu nahin jahaan ke liye

Ever the cynic….

I was told by my mother that my father was very fond of Hindi films. He was a fan of V Shantaram and Shanta Apte. He would visit Mangalore (now Mangaluru) just to watch a newly released Hindi film. This was in early 40s, when travelling from my native place (Mulki) to Mangaluru – about 25 kms of distance – was itself an adventure. It used to take almost the whole day. So to watch a film in a theatre in Mangaluru, it was necessary to stay overnight in the city.

Discussion of Railway related matters-2

Discussion on economics-1
——————————————————————–

We in this blog have covered lots of HFM from all eras. While doing that, we have had lots of discussions on Hindi movies as well.

Yesterday night, and early morning today, I was thinking about the differences between Indian music and Western music, and I realised that there is considerable technical and conceptual differences between the two and the difference between the two kinds of music is something that very few people are aware of. I realised that the “western” music that we in India have brought in is not really “western” music as it is in the west. We have failed to import the spirit of western music. We have ended up introducing western instruments in India but we have failed to tap the vast richness of western music. We have ended up largely becoming a frog in the well, deluding ourselves that our music is older and richer and all that vis a vis western music, whereas the real facts are altogether different. It is a very interesting (at least to me) topic and a rather vast and somewhat involved topic as well. I hope to be able to discuss it in detail when I get my thoughts sorted out on this topic.

Hullo to all in Atuldom

Recently I read an interview of one of my favorite lyricist in the Bangalore Times which was conducted on the sidelines of Bangalore Poetry festival 2017. Every time I read or hear him I start admiring him all the more. Last year on the occasion of his birthday I heard him on Gaana.com (an app supporting continuous song playback) and I was floored by his thought process. There he had said “I don’t like to say things like ‘Hamaare zamaane mein ye hua karta tha. . .’. One shouldn’t lament about the fact that the current generation isn’t repeating what they did. At least they aren’t repeating your mistakes in the process.”  He further went on to say “what do people mean hamaara zamaana, as long as you are living it is your ZAMAANA”. That is a nice way to look at life.
