As we are trudging through lists of songs from various sources, as well as published songs on the internet, everyday there is a this ‘A haa’ moment when one comes across unheard, or heard-long-back-but-now-lost songs. These moments make this search and this journey worth its while. And the notable point is that these wonderful songs, now rare and obscure, mostly come from films which themselves are obscure. Their lack of success on the box office relegated their memory and the related information into depths of anonymity, and the music of such films also went the same way. The great consolation is projects like this blog, and the internet connectivity, that has provided the music lovers with a via media to publish and share the music that sits on forgotten vinyl records or music cassettes, probably stowed away in storage that is not often visited. These valued publications, and the ‘A haa’ moments they generate almost on a daily basis are a wonderful impetus for music lovers everywhere.

“Shehnaai” (1964) is a New Oriental Pictures presentation. This movie is directed by S D Narang. The sat cast of the movie included names like Vishwajeet,Rajshree, Veena, Johnny Walker,Chaand usmani, Asit Sen, Leela Chitnis, Parveen Chaudhary, Nirupa Roy, D.K.Sapru, Rehman, Ifthekar etc.

Teri zulfon se pyaar kaun kare

In this blog, I treat the number of songs discussed as the same as the number of posts. For instance, as of now, it is mentioned that the blog has 4876 songs. But it is not true. It means that this blog had 4876 posts. Multiple version songs, where songs with same lyrics are sung by different artists are discussed in one post in this blog, but they are really different songs. If one begins to count the number of songs that way (which is the actual way of counting songs), then this blog has already has already discussed over 5000 songs. It is for the sake of convenience and to avoid duplication of work that such multiple version songs are discussed in one post.

When I look at the lyrics of this song from “Shaahi Luteraa” (1965), I wonder if the lyricist Gulshan Baawra had ever thought of becoming an anatomist/ physician as an alternative career option. 🙂 One can find mention of so many body parts in this song, viz. “Chehra” (face), “Zulf” (tress of hair), “Aankh” (eye),”Pehloo” (side),”Palken” (eye brows),”dil” (heart), “Jigar” (liver) etc. 🙂 But in the lyricist’s scheme of things, “jigar” is more valuable than “dil”, which few medical practitioners would agree with.

Atul ji and Arun ji have talked about the lady music directors of the 30s and 40s, like Saraswati Devi, Jaddan Bai etc. The careers of these lady composers did not last for very long in the industry. Then in late 1950s, another lady music director made a debut (with Dil Deke Dekho, 1959), and the industry was introduced to Usha Khanna. A career that is still continuing, Usha Khanna has now been active in the industry for a little more than fifty years. Her career was most active in the 1960s and up to the mid 90s, after which her assignments have been few and far between. She never got any Filmfare awards, but in 1983, she was a runner up for the music direction award for the film Souten. In 1979, Yesudas won the best singer award for the song ‘Dil Ke Tukde Tukde Kar Ke Muskuraa Ke Chal Diye’ from the film Dada, with the music composed by Usha Khanna.

It is a song that I have heard many a times right from my younger days, and I in fact had noted down the lyrics of this song in a diary that I used to maintain in 1970s. This diary had lyrics of songs noted down by me from radio as well as scorecards of test matches (noted down through radio commentary) that India played those days. 🙂

Reading about the Atul ji’s description of the tresses and curls of Indian film heroines, as he discussed yesterday in the song Zulfon ko hataa le chehre se (Saawan Ki Ghata) , I am reminded about this wonderful Kishore da song from the movie Paayal Ki Jhankaar.
