Present day movie watchers may associate the title “Khiladi” with Akshay Kumar, but a title like this has been used in Hindi movies for a long time. For example, there was a movie called ‘Khiladi” as far back as 1950. This movie had Ashok Kumar, Suraiyya, Sundar, Indu, Kukku etc in it.

The psychology of this genius mind continues to be a matter of analysis, just for the phenomena this person has become. A comparatively short life and a short film career that lasted barely 15 years. A voice that was apparently nurtured by the drink, and a life that was equally tormented by the same devil. Was it a romantic’s mind that compelled him to exist, as the poets described, a romantic. Was it the lead role in Devdaas (1935) that tampered with the mind and the existence of this prodigious phenomenon.

Though 1950 was “only” six decades ago, it looks like that was an entirely different world altogether from what it is today. For one, things were much simpler and un complicated and moreover, people seemed to have all the time in the world at their disposal. Imagine riding on a slow moving bullock cart and taking entire day to cover a distance of may be 15 miles, that one can now cover in a few minutes. Yes, one used to measure distances in miles those days.

“Mashaal” (1950) is known mainly for the song ( Upar gagan vishaal )that announced the arrival of Manna Dey as a playback singer of note. But these movie also had other nice songs in it, even though these songs, unlike the Manna Dey song, have been forgotten with time.

I was aware of a movie called “Hanste Zakhm” but not “Hanste Aansoo” . It turns out that this movie called “Hanste Aansoo” (1950) had the “distinction” of becoming the first ever Hindi movie to get an “Adults” certificate for this movie. 🙂
