Today’s song is a good Marching song from the film ‘Golconda Ka Qaidi’ – aka ‘Prisoner of Golkonda’ (1954). This was a film made in both Hindi as well as English.

Way back in 1954, when this film was released and shown in Hyderabad, I was still in school, studying for my Matriculation- that is 10th standard. In those days, for 10th standard, a novel used to be studied as a ‘Non-Detail’ subject along with the regular English Text paper. This was to ensure to inculcate a liking for literature among the students as well as introduction of world famous novels etc to them. In that year, we had the famous novel by Anthony Hope – ‘The Prisoner of Zenda’ as a ‘Non-Detail’ syllabus. Fond of reading novels etc, I was simply fascinated by this novel. Till today, I have this novel in my book collection.

Today’s song is from the film Majboori-1954.

The song-“Tere poojan ko Bhagwan, bana man mandir aalishan”- is a famous traditional song. Not only in a few Hindi films, but the song is also sung by many singers as NFS. No one knows how old this song is or who is the original Lyricist of this song. It is sung like a Bhajan by most people.

Today’s song is from the film with a funny name- Pilpili Saheb-1954.

When I saw this film’s posters in Hyderabad in 1954 , I laughed at the title of the film. I thought that the film had to do something with the yellow colour ! None of my friends knew the meaning of this word. After intense discussion, we decided to go to our Hindi teacher-Mathur sir. He was from Allahabad and was a very jovial person. He treated the students with a lot of humour and gentle talk. So we did not feel any fear or awkwardness to ask him this question. Otherwise, in those days asking such questions to any teacher was a certain invitation to caning !

Shekhawati region of Rajasthan consists of the districts of Churu, Jhunjhunu, Sikar and some parts of Jaipur and Nagaur districts. The region is well-known for its painted havelis and temples. I had travelled in Shekhawati region in February 2013 mainly to see the magnificent painted havelis. There are hundreds of such havelis, some abandoned, some still being used as residential houses and a few which have been converted into heritage hotels. There are extensively and intricately painted havelis of some of the industrialists like Birla, Singhania, Goenka, Jhunjhunwaala, Podar, Morarka, Modi etc.

Today’s song is from the film Toote khilone-1954. The film was made by Pragati Pictures, Bombay. Produced by N.Mehta, it was directed by Nanabhai Bhatt. Though this was a social film, Nanabhai Bhatt was known for Mythological and stunt films. His real name was Yeshwant and pet name was Batuk. he directed his first Hindi film-Muqabala-42, using his name-Batuk Bhatt. Nana and Batuk indicate the small one or the younger one. Obviously Nanabhai was the youngest sibling. Incidentally, he was the father of Mahesh Bhatt and Mukesh Bhatt, from his second wife-Shirin bai, one time actress.

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2010-2020) – Song No. 94

November 2010, much like november 2020, saw songs being covered in the blog at a relatively slow rate. On this day ten years ago, five songs were covered in the blog:-

Sapnon mein aana chhed chhed jaanaa Sheesham-1952 07 of 10 songs posted
Muhabbat ke jhoothhe sahaaron ne loota Sanskaar-1952 05 of 07 songs posted
Ye maanaa dil jise dhoondhe Zimbo-1958 All songs covered
Tirchhi nazar ka piyaa waar hai Madaari-1959 All songs covered

Two out of five of these movies have since been YIPPEED in the blog. So potentially songs of three movies are eligible to be discussed in the blog ten year challenge today.
