Talat Mehmood ( 24-02-1924 – 09-05-1998) and the song ‘ tasveer teri dil mera behalaa naa sakegi’ are synonymous. I was under the impression that this song was from a film. But after getting hold of a 78 rpm record ( N.16767) of this song in early 70s, I realised that it was a non-filmy song. I came to know much later that this was one of the top selling gramophone records issued in early 40s and this song brought Talat Mehmood to the limelight as a singer in Hindi film industry.

I find that there are 18 songs listed under ‘Song excluded from movie’ category in this blog. Although the sample is not representative one to come to a definite conclusion, it is interesting to note that O P Nayyar leads in this category with 5 songs followed by Madan Mohan(4 songs), S D Burman (3 songs) and Naushad(2 songs). Sajjad Hussain, Husnalal Bhagatram, Bulo C Rani and Roshan have one song each in this category.

In my younger days, the name of the film FUNTOOSH (1956) sounded to me a bit bizarre. I had also heard people using this Hinglish lingo as adjectives in different context. I had no occasion to watch this movie but judging (or misjudging) from the name of the film, I thought that it was a comedy movie and the song ‘ye meri topi palat ke aah’ was a pointer to that. It was only later when I heard ‘dukhi man mere’ I felt that the film was of a different genre.

I just stumbled upon a beautiful duet ‘raat hai nikhri huyi’ sung by Krishna Goyal and Geeta Dutt from the film MALLIKAA (1956) under the music direction of the great Hansraj Bahl. Tanveer Naqvi is the lyricist.

Kavi Pradeep, the famous poet and lyricist, has been a well known figure both in the film industry and in the field of Hindi literature. He is one of the few poets who have sung their own writings in the films. Going by the numbers, probably Pradeep ji is a leader in this category of lyricist-singer. He has a fairly large number of songs to his credit, that he has sung himself.

January 6th is the death anniversary of Jaidev Verma, known as Jaidev in Hindi film world. He was one of those unlucky music directors who, despite being extremely talented, did not make it to the top in Bollywood. He had given hit songs in Hum Dono (1961), Kinaare Kinaare (1963), Mujhe Jeene Do (1963), Reshma Aur Shera (1972) , Gaman (1979) and many more. He is the only music director who won National Award for best music direction three times for Hindi films – Reshma Aur Sehra, Gaman and Ankahee.
