There are a good number of Hindi films’ prints and negatives especially pertaining to the golden era of Hindi film music which have been lost. The loss could be because of damage to the film prints and negatives probably due to their improper storage. After all, film prints and negatives require storage of some specialised kind. Some producers/owners of the films who had taken due precautions by storing films in film laboratories, lost the films due to reasons beyond their control like fire in the laboratories. Most of these lost films had gems of melodic songs.

Today (14 december 2014) is the 90th birth anniversary of Raj Kapoor (14 december 1924- 2 June 1988). On this occasion, here is a song from “Ab Dilli Door Nahin”(1957). This movie was produced by Raj Kapoor and directed by Amar Kumar for R K Films. The movie had Romi, Motilal, Sulochana Latkar, Yakub, Anwar Hussain, Nand Kishore, Jagdeep, Brij Sharma, C.S.Dubey, Shivaji Rathore, Manohar Gir,Om Prakash, Mohan Choti, Suraj Prakash, Baby Chand aka Nazima, Amjad(later to become the famous villain Amjad Khan), Pappu, Ghansham, Ram Kumar, Tillu, Chandan Mukherji with Guest Artistes viz Iftikhar,Hari Shivdasani,Budo Adwani,Nana Palsikar,Bhupendra Kapur etc. in it.

Writing on old film songs and that too on unreleased film songs is a very hard job. Firstly, hardly any information is available on Internet or in books. Secondly, controversies crop up on the statements made in the write up. India being notoriously hopeless as far as recording history of films, music or songs is concerned, it is extremely difficult to arrive at a definite and undisputable conclusion. Most artistes of those times are beyond our reach and if anyone is still alive, he may not remember the facts properly due to old age. In my work in this field, I have found that old age artistes either don’t remember or believe firmly in wrong/desired events and timings making a mess of the whole information.

“Samundar” (1957) was produced and directed by Premnath for P N Films production where P N surpise surprise ! stood for Premnath. 🙂 The movie was an all family affair. Premnath, Bina Rai (his wife), Rajendranath (his brother) figured in the movie. Others in the cast were Nishi, Tuntun, Anmol Krishan, Ram Avtar, Ullas, Heeralal, Sundar, Ridkoo, Paul Sharma, Rajan Kapoor, Habeeb, Azeem, Mahesh, Manohar, Niranjan etc.

Generally, when we come to century posts, we have celebrations connected to it. HFM songs can be divided into hundreds of categories. What category of songs appeal to us depend on our long term conditioning (temperament) as well as on out short term frame of mind (mood). There are occasions when even people with positive outlook and cheerful disposition feel low. Under such circumstances, some people (depending on their temperament)like to listen to sad melancholic songs and drown in their sorrow in various ways, by withdrawing into their shell, taking to drinking etc. What one needs under such circumstances are songs that enable to to look at the silver linings in the dark cloud and lift your morale by telling you that the setback faced is temporary and brighter days are just round the corner. In other words, you need to listen to songs that inspire you to get back on your feet and get ready to take on the challenges that life has to offer.
