These days we are digging up the songs of N Datta and we are discovering one forgotten gem after another. These are songs that may not have come to the notice of many music lovers because these songs, along with the movie, were forgotten with time. Now adays, thanks to technology and also music enthusiasts, these songs are coming to the fore once again, often for the first time after their original exposure, which may have been some half a century ago.

When I look at the lyrics of this song, I feel that I have come across the lyrics of this song, and perhaps this song was among one of the guest posts by Sudhir jee. But when I check up with the list of songs that have been posted, I am unable to find this song. So perhaps this is a different song, though with lyrics that sound quite familiar, especially the line“yeh kaun aaya hai aanchal udaata”.

“Jism ko maut aati hain lekin, ruh ko maut aati nahin hain”. These are lines in the song “Kaun hai jo sapno main aayaa” from film “Jhuk Gayaa Aasmaan “(1968), which can be applied to many Hindi films, especially of golden era of Hindi film songs which ‘died’ in no time as soon as they were released. But many of songs from such films remained immortal.

Before the advent of television and internet, Radio Ceylon (later Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation) and Vividh Bharati were the main sources of listening to Hindi film songs. In respect of old Hindi film songs, it was observed that while Radio Ceylon specialised in broadcasting film songs of 40s and 50s, Vividh Bharati’s broadcast was more pronounced towards the songs of late 50s and 60s. Accordingly, during those days of radio, I had categorised songs into ‘Radio Ceylon’ songs and ‘Vividh Bharati’ songs depending upon where these songs were heard the most. 😀

“Santaan” (1959) is an Anupam Chitra Production. This movie was produced by Mahesh Kaul and directed by Jyoti Swaroop. The starcast of the movie included names like Rajendra Kumar, Kamini Kadam, Nazir Hussain, Reeta Rai, Leela Mishra, Manorama, David Abraham etc.

Nirupa Roy, who in the mind of most moviegoers of my generation was immortalised as the long suffering mother of the hero (typically Amitabh Bachchan), was born on 4th january.

“Maan Ke Aansoo” (1959) is a movie which had actors like Ajit, Nalini Jaiwant, Lalita Pawar, Kammo, Agha, Jankidas, Tuntun etc in it. It was a Sharad Productions movie and it was directed by Dhirubhai Desai.

“Madaari” (1959) was a quintessential B grade movie. Such movies normally remained confined to their dedicated fans and failed to register among the mainstream movie watchers. But in some rare cases, the songs of such movies became so popular that mainstream movie watchers were made to sit up and take notice.
