“Kavi Kalidas” (1959) was a Sindhu Films Production. It was a brainchild of S N Tripathi who had produced and directed it and of course composed the music for this movie. The movie had Bharat Bhushan ,Nirupa Roy, Anita Guha,Sapru, Sabita Chatterjee, Niranjan Sharma, Babu Raje etc in it.

Philosophical songs is a genre of songs that are calming to the nerves and they help us see things in perspective and make us realise that we are mere specks in the grand scheme of things and so one should not entertain delusions of grandeur about oneself. KEECHAKVADH (1959) as the name of the film suggests, was a mythological film. It was produced in Marathi and Hindi versions by Balasaheb (P K) Pathak under the banner of Manik Studios and directed by Yeshwant Pethkar. The star cast included Baburao Pendharkar (Keechak), Sumati Gupte (Draupadi), Shobhna Samarth (Sudeshna), Vishwas Kunte, Vimla Kumari, Helen etc. I had seen the Marathi version of the film on the internet mainly to get to know the song situation of the iconic song ‘dhund madhumati’. In that process, I had to see the full film as this particular song was almost at the end of the film before Keechak is killed by Bheem. I had no regret in watching the full film as the crisp screen-play made the already known story a still interesting one to watch.

I am aware of a joke where a Pathan from Afghanistan saw the poster of “Chiraag Kahaan Roshni Kahaan” and went to the movie hall hoping to see a movie depicting the tale of two Khans namely Chiraag Khan and Roshni Khan :).

Listening to well known old classics is a pleasurable exercise. But discovering old forgotten songs from old forgotten movies and listening to them is an equally and often more pleasurable exercise.

Dhaani chunar mori haay re

It was in 1949 that Lata sang a song about “Laal dupatta”and that song, namely Hawa me udta jaaye(Barsaat) has become a much loved timeless classic.
Ten years later, Lata sang a song about “dhaani chunariya”. This song is extremely melodious and sweet, but this time the movie as well as the song failed to make ripples and by now this song has ended up as an obscure song.

Starcast of th movie had names like Raj Kapoor, Nutan, Om prakash, Lalita Pawaar, Raj Mehra, Vishwa Mehra, Madan Puri, Leela Mishra, Pachhi, Jagdish Sethi, Uma Dutt, Nazir Hussain, Sushil, Sarita, Mauji, Uma Khosla, Ratna, Mona Saxena etc.

“Nayi Raahen” (1959) is an obscure movie by now. It was a Goel Cine Corporation Production. Devendra Goel was the producer and the movie was directed by Brij Sadanah. Starcast of the movie includes names like Ashok Kumar,Geeta Bali,Shubha Khote, Anoop Kumar, Nazir Hussain, RadhaKrishan, Madan Puri, Mohan Choti, Nazir Kashmiri etc.
