“Junglee” (1961) was in some ways the movie that launched Shammi Kapoor’s career and set the tone for the Shammi Kapoor movies with their set formula. The formula called for a debutant heroine pitted against Shammi Kapoor, Rafi singing some fantastic songs, Rajendranath as the sidekick, and the resultant movies would be lapped up by the public.

Kashmir ki kali hoon main

Till recently I thought that this song “Kashmir ki kali hoon main” was the title song of “Kashmir ki kali”. Only when I began to research this song that I realised my ignorance. It is indeed a Shammi Kapoor song, but from “Junglee” and its music was by Shankar Jaikishan (“Kashmir ki kali” had its music by O P Nayyar).

This song swept every award that it was eligible for. This song from “Sasuraal” was the top song in Binaca geetmala final of 1961, and Rafi won Filmfare best male singer award for this song. This was the second time one particular song won these two coveted honours. Rafi himself had achieved the same distinction in the previous year for “Chaudhvin ka chaand ho” for “Chaudhvin ka chaand”.
