Today’s song is from the film Rai Saheb-1942.

How many of us really know anything about the title ” Rai Saheb” ? I am sure most people may not know.

When the British were ruling a larger part of the world, they had a system of honouring special people for their Loyalty towards the Raj, or for those who had done some great work, those who worked for removing the social ills etc etc. To do this, these people were given special Titles. The British Royalty used to bestow honourable titles for extraordinary work in its Empire, like OBE (Order of British Empire), CBE,CSI and similar titles. Usually such titles used to be given to Royal people of its Empire like Kings, Rajahs, Maharajas etc etc. It was a great honour.

THE SECRETARY (1938) was produced under the banner of Ranjit Movietone and it was directed by Chaturbhuj Doshi. The star cast included Madhuri, Trilok Kapoor, Charlie, Kalyani, Begg, Wahidan Bai, Rajkumari etc. The film was based on a story written by Gunvantrai Acharya, one of the most prolific novelists in Gujarati language. By the way, I observe that Gunvantrai Acharya wrote story and screen play for films directed by Chaturbhuj Doshi for Ranjit Movietone like Gorakh Aaya (1938), Musaafir (1940) and Sasural (1941). Both came to Ranjit Movietone after their stints with journalism in Gujarati newspapers. Incidentally, all the three films and the film under discussion had Gyan Dutt as the music director.

LAGAN (1941) was produced under the banner of New Theatres and was directed by Nitin Bose. The star cast included K L Saigal, Kanan Devi, Nawab Kashmiri, Nemo, Jagdish Sethi, Girdhari Lal Vaid, Naresh Bose, Rohmat Bibi etc. There were 11 songs in the film, all penned by Arzoo Lucknowi which were set to music by R C Boral. The film was 5th largest grosser on the box office for 1941 and got the Bengal Film Journalists Association’s award for the best film of 1941. Incidentally, after this film, both K L Saigal and Kanan Devi left New Theatres, the former to Bombay (Mumbai) and the latter joined M P Productions of P C Barua. K L Saigal, however, returned to New Theatre for doing ‘My Sister’ (1944) which was his last film for New Theatres.
