A very special song for Mohammad Rafi fans. This is what is real effortless singing. He makes it sound as if it is his ‘baayen haathh ka khel’. And it was his forte to seamlessly go from one mood to another, go from light, comic mode to qawwali, sounding quite serious and melodious and switch to western style, all in the space of less than a minute. If what I say does not make sense, than one can only listen to this song and confirm. What range and what smoothness of voice and diction. And adding the punjabi tadka too in a spoken line towards the end of the song.

Today (2 september 2013) is the birth anniversary of Sadhana, the heart throb of movie goers in 1960s, whose “Sadhana cut” hairstyle was a big craze those days. She had a dream run in 1960s and then she suffered an ailment that forced her to take a break from movies. By the time she came back, the movie world had moved on and had passed her by. That is how it is in the movie world.

This is a club dance song from the film KARIGAR-1958. I have already written about the film Karigar and the unique friendship of Vasant Joglekar-the producer/Director of this film and actor Ashok Kumar in my comments on another song from the movie.

I some how reach a Majrooh Sultanpuri song very often. This one is a comic song in the film Maaya (1961). The music director for this film is Salil Chaudhary and it is written by Majrooh. Mohammad Rafi is singing this solo song for Agha. Helen is also seen in the picturization. Agha and Helen are indulging in western style dance using props. Helen is brandishing a small purse and Agha has two props, a hat and a walking stick to dance with. They are also using some extra artist standing around, as ‘Ellora Ajanta Qutub Minar” and Dilli, Bombay and Calcutta.

In old Hindi movies, especially those of 1950s and 1960s, we often see songs picturised on “Taanga”, also called “Tonga”, not to be confused with a country of this name. 🙂
“Taanga” was actually a mode of public transport in India those days. With time, Taanga has all but vanished as a mode of public transport in India. But they have not become extinct. One can still find them in some small towns of India. I have noticed them in small places in Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh etc. In fact, one can see them in Fatehpur Sikri near Agra in UP. I recall that we (I, my wife and daughter) actually rode on a Taanga to go to Fatehpur Sikri a few years ago.

I dont know how it is that I am finding songs penned by Majrooh Sultanpuri again and again. The song which is under discussion is from the film “Ardhangini”. From the other songs posted here and seen on youtube it is seen that this film stars Meena Kumar and Raj Kumar, and from the title and songs I assume this to be similar type of social film like ‘Aarti”.
