I was aware of “Aarzoo” (1965) which was a musical blockbuster. Then I became aware of another movie of this name that came in 1950 and I found the songs of this movie “boring”. In fact, that is what happened with me for songs of movies with similar names.Being a youngster growing in 1970s, I liked music of “Andaaz”(1971),”Adalat” (1976) , “Parvarish”(1977) and disliked music of older movies with same name and wondered why older generation created such “boring” music.

In Hindi movies,any occasion is good enough for a song. When one is happy, sad, in a romantic occasion, in a philosophical mood, in a party, in a mountain, in a beach- all these occasions lead to songs in Hindi movies.

Though Deewali is one of the most important festivals in India, Hindi movies do not have adequate number of Deewali songs in them. This is in sharp contrast to the songs for another major Indian festival, viz Holi. There are many more “Holi” songs than we have “Deewali” songs.

When I was a kid, I obviously loved to play with toys. One toy that I loved was the one that had a round object attached to an elastic string. You held one end of the strings to your hand and threw the round object away, which would come back to your palm again. This back and forth motion of the object where the object, despite being thrown away always came back to you, like a bad coin or an obedient dog, was a source of great amusement to kids like me.

There are several patriotic songs in Hindi movies. Most of these songs were created after independence, when India had already acquired independence. Creating patriotic songs in an independent nation is easy, but just imagine the case when India was not yet an independent nation.
