Lootera (1965) is a story of pirates and princesses. It is a B grade action drama, with a star cast that includes Dara Singh, Prithviraj Kapoor, Nishi, Helen, Hiralal, Jeevan, Maruti, Bela Bose and others. The music of this movie is simply superb. All songs of this movie are very hummable and well known. And all songs, except one, are rendered by Lata Mangeshkar.

“Luteraa” (1965) is a B grade movie starring Dara Singh.Of course, Laxmikant Pyarelal, the upcoming music directors, who were signed up to compose music for this movie maintained that Dara Singh movies used to be big banner movies and calling them B grade is unfair. Power to you- Laxmikant Pyarelal. There are definitely many of us now who love these so called B grade movies. They not only had different story lines vis a vis the A grade movies, they also allowed many bit actors the opportunity to showcase their talent. It is these B grade movies that gave us Mumtaz,Sanjeev Kumar, Feroz Khan, to name a few. And it is such movies that gave longer (and often significant) roles to people like Helen, Bela Bose etc. And the music of such movies was almost always A grade.

Think of Sheikh Mukhtar, the hero of so many ‘Dada’ and ‘Ustad’ movies, the proverbial angry young man of the 50s and 60s ‘B’ screen Hindi movies long before Amitabh got that tag in the 70s and 80s. Now think of the same he-man in a skirt dress and bob cut hair? And dancing the twist, and pat-a-cake, no less?

Hindi Tarzan movies typically had Dara Singh playing the role of Tarzan, with Mumtaz playing his love interest. Here, in this movie called “Tarzan Comes To Delhi” (1965), Mumtaz decided to bring Tarzan in contact with civilisation. Here she takes Tarzan and his diminutive assistant Bhagwan to a hotel.

It is often said that Hindi movie are enjoyed the best when you leave your brain behind. And when it comes to Dara Singh movies, it helps even more if one did not have a brain to begin with. 😀 Dara Singh movies are good brainless entertainment, and they are grade Z gems, as someone lovingly puts it in youtube. Brainless entertainment and grade Z gems- waah ! There cannot be higher “praise” than that for Dara Singh movies !

Dara Singh, who was a legend among Indians of 1960s and 1970s became a fairly well known actor in Bollywood movies too. Most of his movies were C grade stuff, scoffed at by the “purists”, but his movies must have been profitable, considering that movies featuring Dara Singh continued to get produced. IN fact, Dara Singh himself produced many of his own movies.

C grade Bollywood movies on 1950s and 1960s failed to get registered in the minds of mainstream audience, but these movies certainly had some audience and they must have been making enough money to stay in business.

In Bollywood movies on gods, gods are often shown behaving in exemplary fashion, and not like humans. Perhaps that is one reason why such movies do not become popular with movie watchers. No love scenes, no songs and dance and therefore no audiences for such devotional movies.
