Today (29 september) is the birth anniversary of Ravi Baswani (September 29, 1946 – July 27, 2010). Ravi Baswani made his debut as a comedian in 1980s and he acted in some lovely comedy movies of that era, viz “Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron”, “Peechha Karo” etc.

Today (18 september) is the birthday of Shabana Azmi. Daughter of Kaifi Azmi and Shaukat Azmi, Shabana Azmi made her debut in arts movies in early 1970s. after a few years, she made it to the mainstream movies. She was a misfit in the usual leading lady kind of singing dancing roles, but she was good in roles that required some real acting. and she got roles that exploited her acting ability.

Most of them would even know the name of the film and that the song was composed by Iqbal Qureshi. Those who have watched the movie or video clip of this song, all of them would remember that the song was picturised on a modest looking Helen and Chandrashekhar. In most Hindi movies, the actors lead reel lives that has little resemblence to real life of normal people. And it was widely believed (and the myths are further perpetuated by people) that movie watchers used movies to live their fantasies and so they wanted to relive their fantasies in the movies instead of being reminded of their day to day life. And that explained the larger than life characters in Hindi movies.

Somehow I feel that “Umrao Jaan” was to Rekha what “Paakeza” was to Meena Kumari. Both these movies were of a similar genre, showing a courtesan singing Mujra in a kotha.
