Sureeli Suman – 4
————————–
1961 mythological Black and White film ‘Jai Bhawani’ was directed by Dhirubhai Desai, under ‘Prabha Pictures’ banners. The star-cast included Jayashri Gadkar, Manhar Desai, Lata Sinha, Sapru, Veena, Niranjan Sharma, Ram Mohan, Master Dabbar etc. HFGK is silent about the lyricists, but the other source on internet gives that credit to ‘Gopal Singh Nepali’ (1926-1963). SD Burman was a well established and well respected music director by the time I became aware of his name (sometime in late 1960s). But like everyone else, he too made his debut sometime. It is difficult to imagine it today, but his earlier career was full of struggles and his career as a music director in Hindi movies was almost a non starter. He was given his initial breaks in 1940s by Sasadhar Mukherjee of Filmistan who signed him up for “Aath Din”(1946) and “Shikaari”(1946). The music of these two movies did not create much impression at that time. It was his next movie with Filmistan, namely “Do Bhai”(1947) that helped SD Burman get some foothold in the industry. He kept scoring music for the subsequent movies of Filmistan.

Though Mumbai gangout happened nearly a month ago (on 21 december 2014), details about it are slow in coming. I wrote about my preparations to join this meet in this article on 3 january 2015. The above wonderful writeup has now inspired me to write the second part of my own take on this meet. So here is goes.
