In the late 60s, there was a time when I would watch one Hindi film almost every week-end in the theatre. The one aspect of the films which used to irritate me at that time was actors suddenly going into singing mode thus interrupting, like a speed breaker on the highway, the smooth flow of the narration. Some people would even walk out of the theatre as soon as the song started on the screen and come back only after the end of the song. Of course the audience would not do that when a song is melodious and well picturised.

There are qawwali’s and than there are some qawwali’s. Or should I say there are qawwalis and than there are some filmi qawwalis by Roshan. To begin with I am not a very big fan or a knowledgeable person to talk about qawwali, hence this flippancy 😉 .

We all know that Madan Mohan left for his heavently abode during the making of this film “Laila Majnu”. The film released in 1976 and the music of this film was super hit and it is very popular to this day. The success that eluded him during his lifetime was only destined to be his after his death. I have been meaning to write down the lyrics of this films songs, as many of them are still to be discussed in this blog.

“Parinay” (1974) was an Art film. In other words it was a low budget film whose makers were so broke that they could not hire big names. So they made do with out of job artists. The actors of this movie were all newcomers, viz Shabana Azmi, Romesh Sharma, Asha Sachdev, Dinesh Thakur Preeti Ganguly, T.P.Jain etc. I remember watching a still of Shabana Azmi from this movie. It was obvious that the movie makers were too broke to even afford makeup men. Shabana Azmi looked ugly and I wondered how a lady with that looks can ever be chosen to work in Hindi movies, and that too as the leading lady.

“Ek Thhi Reeta” (1971) is a recent movie by the standards of this blog, yet that has not prevented it from becoming an obscure movie nearly as soon as this movie was released. This movie was produced and directyed by Roop K Shorey. The movie had Vinod Mehra, Rehman, Yogiraj, I. S. Johar, Tanuja, Pompi, Mona Mullick, Manmohan Krishna, Madhu Kumar, Lolita Chatterjee, Daisy Irani, Faryal etc ion it and the movie must have sunk without a trace seeing that I had not heard of this movie during 1971 when I was a precocious kid keen to know about everything.
