It is always a refreshing change to find songs that deal with day to day concerns of movie goers. And what is a more day to day concern for young ones than their studies. Tender minds of young students have struggled to cope with intricacies of their subject for many generations. 🙂

She is all of 16 years when she makes her debut on the silver screen. The year is 1952, and the film – a Bangla production ‘Roshnara’, directed by Ardhendu Bose. Fast forward to couple of decades later. The year is 1971, and she is romancing Raj Kumar, Rajesh Khanna, Sanjeev Kumar, Jeetendra, Amitabh Bachchan on screen. A graceful on screen presence, with an impressive portfolio of powerful performances behind her, she belongs to that extra special club of leading ladies that ruled the silver screen from 1950s to the 1970s – Meena Kumari, Nutan, Sadhna, Asha Parekh, Waheeda Rehman, Vijayntimala. . . – all an exclusive group.

Ah, the crisp voice of Kamal Barot. A sound that is so unique, and then so attractive, in certain scenarios. Granted that this voice may not exhibit as wide a range as some of her more successful peers, but the concern also works the other way round. That the voice, and some more like hers, did not get enough opportunity to develop more. We do find examples of her songs in all genres – except maybe having sung some sort of a cabaret song for Helen. Alas, it was an era dominated by few. And maybe that is what life is about – circumstances and relationships many a time define success, more than talent does.

Small treasures, rare treasures. The non film songs of Kamal Barot are not very many, and by my awareness, the number of songs she recorded outside of films might be less than twenty. And the number of such songs available, would even be lesser.

The post was followed with comments from readers, with requests for other non film songs from the same singer. The song in this post was specifically requested, as it had been by AK ji, in his earlier communications.
