Recently, I came to know of a film called AAYI PHIR SE BAHAAR (1960) for the first time when I heard a song from this film on a clip of songs from Radio Ceylon programme uploaded on YT. After a few google searches, I came to know the reason why this was an obscure film. It was a dubbed Hindi film of a Tamil film ‘Raja Rani’ (1956) with Hindi songs replacing Tamil songs. The Hindi version had Vedpal Verma as the music director. Since all the songs in Hindi were composed on the original tunes of Tamil songs, one can say that Vedpal Verma was more of a music arranger for the Hindi version songs than the music director.

Mukesh and his Composers – 11a

The last post on this series dealt with the non-film songs sung by Mukesh for Ravindra Jain. That was nearly five months back. Some personal and professional matters crept in resulting in the inordinate delay. Though there was enough time for a few posts, the procrastinator in me kept on scoring small victories resulting in the holdup.

When I was a kid, I lived in a small township where we had a medical centre as part of the facilities within the township. It was manned by a fine doctor, Dr. Sinha. He was from Bihar, never spoke much, but his diagnosis was excellent. He never over-dosed patients – I remember he would often send me back home without prescribing any medicines at all. To my disappointment! 🙂 I’d get well on my own, within a day or so.

“Mujhko mere baad zamaana dhoondhegaa”.
“Caravaan guzar gaya gubaar dekhte rahe”.
These were words that proved to be prophetic. In the monsoon of 1980 we had to bid good bye to The Mohd. Rafi.

It has been 35 years since Mohammad Rafi left this world. Unbelievable. Our statistics page says that there are around 4845 songs sung by him in Hindi films. (Wikipedia puts a figure of around 5000). And we are past 2400 (as per the latest updation). So we still have around 2400 songs to go. That means fodder for our blog for another few years I suppose. And all the fans of Rafisaab in our Atuldom can get to work to reach out to all his songs. It is actually not that difficult a job.

Today (17 july 2015) is the 96th birth anniversary of Snehal Bhatkar (17 july 1919-29 may 2007). His actual name was Vasudev Gangaram Bhatkar but he composed music under various names viz. Vasudev, B.Vasudev, Snehal and V.G.Bhatkar and finally settled for the name of Snehal Bhatkar, where the name Snehal was derived from Snehlata, the name of his daughter ! He used these pseudo names because he was an employee of HMV and his contract with HMV prohibited him from working outside HMV.
