Today’s song is from the film Dr.Z-1959.
When I first saw the title of this film, I thought it to be a Sci- Fi film. In the period of the 1950s and the 1960s many Sci Fi films from Hollywood were coming to India and our clever filmmakers used to grab the story matter. By making few changes in the story to protect themselves from legal action (like the film Begunah-1957), Hindi films were made by them. It is not that there was a shortage of good stories or there were no creative story writers in the industry, but many B and C grade filmmakers found this method profitable and saleable. In those days, a certain section of the film audience was devoted to such films.
However, when I found later – to my dismay – that this was just an ordinary crime story film mixed with a Love story, I was disappointed. looking at its cast, director and the Music director, one could easily guess the type of film that it was. The title of the film was supposed to arouse the interest of the fixed audience.

Today (13 June 2023)is the birth centenary of Prem Dhawan (13 June 1923-7 May 2001).
When I was growing up, I knew him as the lyricist of patriotic songs. Among his most well known songs to me were “O mera rang de basanti chola” from “Shaheed”(1965), “Ae mere pyaare watan tujhpe dil qurbaan” from “Kabuliwala”(1961) and “Chhodo kal ki baaten kal ki baat puraani” from Hum Hindustani(1960). Though I knew him mainly as a lyricist, sometimes he would double up as lyricist cum music director, as in “Shaheed”(1965) and “Pavitra Paapi”(1970).

Today’s song is from the film Choron ki Baraat-1960. This is a very rare song from a film, which is making its Debut on the Blog with this song. There was another film having the same title ,in 1980 also. 26 film titles started with the word Chor…, from 1931 to 2012.
Produced by Charanjeet, under the banner of K Pictures, Bombay, the film was directed by Pradeep Nayyar and the Music Director was Manohar (Arora), whose assistants for this film were Sonik-Omi, who themselves became a reasonably successful MD pair with the film ” Dil ne phir yaad kiya”-1966. Geeta Dutt – Solos and duets (02)
————————————–————————————–
Among Geeta Dutt’s endearing songs, there are innumerable duets. Maximum no. of her duets is bound to be with Mohammed Rafi sahab, for the obvious reason that at the times she was most active, coincides with the period when various music directors were having all male songs sung by Rafi sahab. So there are films where Rafi sahab has duets with Lata, Asha and Geeta, plus solos by all of them, with a female duet also thrown it. This would be a typical late 50’s music score. Sometimes a female singer or two are changed and Shamshad Begum is there, with one solo and/or duet.
