Today (Sunday, 19 july 2015) is a special day for the blog. The blog turns seven year old today. 🙂

It was on this day in 2008 that this blog had made a beginning with the song Mile na phool to kaanton se dosti kar li (Anokhi Raat).

Vintage Shamshad Begam

Song-1 Shamshad Begam and Motilal
———————————–
I started seeing films since my early childhood in the late 40s. I was lucky enough to see many films of the 30’s too, in their second or third runs. By the mid 50s, the films from the 30s were gone but almost all films of the 40s were still available.

English, Hindi, Marathi, Telugu or Kannada- language was no bar as far as watching movies of these languages was concerned . Those were the days when 78 RPM records used to be played by Hotels on gramophone. This helped me to hear the latest songs. In the 1960s Posh hotels had Juke Box. Soon it became common and Juke Boxes were seen everywhere. You needed just a coin of 4 Annas to listen to your desired song on it. Usually 4 songs in a row were lined up and they could all be listed to by putting 4 coins in it.

THE VIBRANT 40s (Episode No. 3)
———————————–

The Hindi film industry has been very dynamic throughout its history. From the beginning till today, plenty of new ideas, experiments and changes have improved the industry in many of its departments. Of course, it is not always that improvement in Technique improves the quality. As per the latest Technology, nowadays,to record a Duet song with chorus, it is not necessary for both the singers to be available at the same time and sing the song together. With 24 track tapes, nowadays, each singer comes as per his appointment to the recording studio, sings and records his part of the song and goes away. Same with the chorus party also. Once everyone has sung his part of the song, then the entire song is mixed and rerecorded together with the track of music and chorus included in it. Lo and Behold….Your New song is ready !

Men, they say, are from Mars. I am sure all the lady friends and readers on this blog will readily agree. No doubt when they need favors from their better halves, the pleading, hang-dog look on their faces is really very “maasoom”. But when they are in their own swing, well then the head is in the sky, and the whole creation is tiny and petty in comparison. Or so they say.

“Ek Do Teen” (1953) was a Shorey Films Production. After the success of his “Ek Thhi Ladki” (1949), Roop Shorey made “Ek Do Teen” (1953) with a similar story line and similar team. He in fact would make movies on the same storyline for the rest of his movie making career till 1970s, but would never be able to replicate the success of “Ek Thhi Ladki” (1949) again.

Remembering Motilal, a great artist and a peerless actor, who departed from this world on 17th June, 1965. A vivacious personality, so full of life and friendship all his life, he passed away friendless and penniless. Another sad commentary on the state of affairs of this industry.

I had not heard the name of the film BEETE DIN (1947). What prompted me to know about this film was a song ‘arshon pe sitaara hai wo’ from this film which is sung by Mukesh and M A Rauf (Osmania), one of the two music directors in the film. The song’s composition is somewhat different than what one usually finds in most of Hindi film songs. There is no repetition of lines of mukhda in the antaras. The tune is more or less the same for both the mukhda and antaras.

I have so far seen three films produced and directed by Roop Kishore Shorey – ‘Ek Thhi Ladki’ (1949), ‘ Dholak’ (1951) and ‘Ek Do Teen’ (1953) and I relished them wholeheartedly. He was known in his hay days as ‘King of Comedy’ as most of his films were based on light situational comedies. There was no gaudiness in his comedy films as the comedy emanated from a ‘self goal’ that is, the characters in his films laughed on themselves rather than taking pleasure in laughing on others.
