PAAPI (1943) was produced by Satish Batra under the banner of Batra Productions, Lahore. The film was directed by Majnu. The star cast included Madhuri, Zahoor Raja, Majnu, Salma, Satish Batra, Moti, etc. I do not have much idea about the story line of the film. In a snippet appearing in one of the ‘Filmindia’ issues of 1943, there was an indication that it was a story built around the life of a sinner who had embarked upon his vicious design and poisoning the society. Probably, the film must have ended with the sinner getting reformed.

As we get to the close of today, 8th Sep, I believe we should not let the day pass without remembering another great artist whose birth anniversary also falls today. The creator of such wonderful and popular melodies like “Do Naina Tumhaare Pyaare Pyaare” (‘Shrimati ji’, 1952), “Girengi Bijliyaan Kab Tak, Jalenge Aashiyaan Kab Tak” (‘Sultaan e Aalam’, 1956), and “Ye Zameen Hamaari Ye Aasmaan Hamaara”(‘Zameen Ke Taare’, 1960) S Mohinder is also the name behind the music of such films as ‘Paapi’ (1953), ‘Shirin Farhaad’ (1955), and ‘Naata’ (1955).

This is a song from Film- Paapi-1953, a film largely remembered for the only Double Role that Raj kapoor ever did in his career. Another reason to remember this film was that this was a film Directed by Sardar Chandulal Shah, the owner of Ranjit Studios and Ranjit Movietone. To understand why his direction was important in this film, we will have to go into the history of Ranjit first.
