Today, January 5, 2025, is the 44th Remembrance Day of Ramchandra Narhar Chitalkar, popularly known as C Ramchandra as a music director and Chitalkar as a playback singer. He regaled the connoisseurs of Hindi film music with his melodious musical compositions in the 1950s and 1960s. He was the pioneer of introducing popular foot-tapping songs with western musical influence and western musical instruments like saxophone and guitar in his compositions as early as in the 1940s. At the same time, he was composing classical raag-based as well as folk-based songs. He was trained in Hindustani classical music for six years first under Vinayakbua Patwardhan and later Shankarrao Sapre.

Despite producing many melodious songs especially in the 1950s, it is unfortunate that C Ramchandra did not get any award – whether National Film Award or Filmfare Award as a music director. The first Filmfare Awards were announced in April 1954 for films released in 1953. But his film, ‘Anarkali (1953) was not in the reckoning for the best music director’s award. His film, ‘Aazaad’ (1955) and ‘Paighaam’ (1959) were nominated for the Filmfare Award in best music director category but did not win. But the fact remains that many of his melodious and rhythmic songs of 1950s are still popular among the current generation which itself is a great award to a creative genius.

Madhubala-1950, A Ranjit Movietone film, directed by Prahlad Dutt had music by Pt.Lachhiram. The cast of the film was Madhubala, Dev Anand, Jeevan, Randhir, Manju, Ram Avatar and others.

We have been taught in our school that 2=2 is 4. But in life, sometimes 2+2 is also 22 like, when a Love marriage is by the willing consent of both the families, or getting a child after 10 years of marriage or when your son stands First and wins a Gold medal in his MBBS course, it is the 2+2=22 ! Similarly when ‘Rati’ and ‘Madan’ come together, it is 2+2=22 ! In our language, when the eternal beauty Madhubala pairs with the handsome, young Dev Anand it is 2+2=22 again.

In the film Madhubala-1950, when these two were paired, no wonder people were ecstatic and crowded the cinema halls. No one bothered if the story was weak or the music was third rate. These two were enough to please them. Here, of course the story was good and the music too !

In this article, I am presenting a song, ‘suno aye duniyawaalon ek naya paighaam laaya hoon’ from an incomplete film, ‘Naya Mandir’ (1961). It was directed by Kishore Sahu. It had Manoj Kumar, Mala Sinha and Mehmood in main roles. I came to know of this song on the audio album of ‘Film Hi Film’ (1983). Unfortunately, this song seems to have been deleted from the VCD of the film available on one of the video sharing platforms. Since video clip of the song is available in continuation of the scene from ‘Film Hi Film. (1983), it can be construed that the song was included in the film.

Shahab Ahmed, the producer of ‘Film Hi Film’ (1983) had earlier produced ‘Cinema Cinema’ (1979). During his visit to Bombay Film Laboratory, he was astonished to see cans of more than 2000 unfinished films lying in the laboratory. Shahab Ahmed thought that a lot of efforts had gone into making these films which unfortunately remained incomplete for various reasons. So, he came with the idea of incorporating scenes and songs from a few select incomplete films to make a full-length feature film [Source: ‘…and Pran’ (2005) by Bunny Rueben].

Hullo Atuldom

Back to writing a post after a full month, last one was on 6th November to pay tribute to Sanjeev Kumar. In this period I have been getting gentle nudges by our Guruji, enquiring about the lull in my writing. He even suggested that I strike a deal with Sadanandji, about pacing our landmark posts (at that point Sadanandji was four short of his century). I assured Arunkumarji that by the time I get back to writing Sadanandji would have hit his century and gone far ahead; he is sitting on 1014 currently.

I have been a little pre-occupied attending a few weddings, accompanied with learning to shake a leg for the dances to execute at the pre-wedding sangeet and other wedding related celebrations. A few of my nephews got married in this wedding season.

Today’s song is from the film Jhamela-1953.

This is my 1700th post on this Blog. I am very pleased with this landmark. At the age of 86 years, if I am able to write so many articles, it is nothing less than God’s Blessings. This century is the third century I have achieved in a single year i.e. in 2025 ! The 15th century came on 28-1-2025, the 16th century came on 28-5-2025 and now the third century came today, on 13-10-2025. What a coincidence !

Starting my career as a medical Representative in Glaxo Laboratories, I retired in 1998 as the General Manager- Marketing and today I am a Director in 2 well known Pharma companies. After my retirement I ran my own Consultancy firm for 10 years and then I left the Pharma industry with 40 years’ experience.
