Today (1 october 2015) is the 109th birth anniversary of S D Burman (1 October 1906 – 31 October 1975). So it is our duty as a music blog to try and discuss a few songs composed by S D Burman on the occasion. Today is the 96th birth anniversary of Majrooh Sultanpuri (1 October 1919 – 24 May 2000) as well. We have discussed one song of each of them today. We will try to discuss more of their songs today including a song where the two collaborated together.

SD Burman was a well established and well respected music director by the time I became aware of his name (sometime in late 1960s). But like everyone else, he too made his debut sometime. It is difficult to imagine it today, but his earlier career was full of struggles and his career as a music director in Hindi movies was almost a non starter. He was given his initial breaks in 1940s by Sasadhar Mukherjee of Filmistan who signed him up for “Aath Din”(1946) and “Shikaari”(1946). The music of these two movies did not create much impression at that time. It was his next movie with Filmistan, namely “Do Bhai”(1947) that helped SD Burman get some foothold in the industry. He kept scoring music for the subsequent movies of Filmistan.

Today’s song is from the film Abhimaan-1973.
It is not that I write only about films and music of the period from 1930s to 1960s. Though that is my first love and also my forte, I believe that Amitabh’s films of the 70s and 80s are in a league of their own. Like millions of his fans, I too was an ardent fan of Amitabh Bachchan for his pre-1984 films. My most favourite film of Amitabh Bachchan is Trishool-78. In those days, I had bought the VCR cassette of Trishool and watched the film repeatedly on it,till my wife and daughters got sick of it and staged a mutiny against me. After the VCR became obsolete, I sold it at just Rs. 100 and also disposed off all the video cassettes-except Trishool. It is still with me, as useless as anything can be and occupying a space in the cabinet. It carries a sentimental value for me. Though I can not play it anymore, arting with it is out of question. Incidentally I do not have VCD of this or for that matter of any other film.

Mukesh and his Composers – 3
———————————
The off-screen romance between Dev Anand and Suraiyya was well known. On-screen, if there was any song which symbolized the relationship it was this romantic duet from Vidya 1948 sung by Mukesh and Suraiyya.
Hold on. Mukesh giving playback for Dev Anand?. Well, yes, there were 3 occasions in which this rarity occurred. A solo and a duet in Vidya and a duet in Shair with Lata under Ghulam Mohammed.
