Earlier today, in another post I had mulled over the decline of films with mythological themes. Extending that concern further, I would also include the theme of Muslim religious and social films, which seem to be on the decline. Once again, in the 90s and later, I cannot really recall any significant film based on Islamic social and religious values.

“Do Dilon Ki Daastaan” (1966) is by now an obscure movie. This movie was a production of Pradeep Kumar and his brother under their banner viz Deep and Sandeep Production. Pradeep Kumar directed the movie and the starcast included names viz. Pradeep Kumar, Vyjyanti Mala, Om Prakash, Jagdeep, Rehman, Shashikala, B. Nandi, Nazir Hussain, Tuntun etc.

“Lakeeren” (1954) has by now ended up as an obscure movie, but that is not how it must have been during its time. It was a Sushil Pictures production and it was directed by Harbans. Starcast of the movie included big names like Ashok Kumar, Nalini Jaiwant, Pran, Durga Khote, Ramayan Tiwari, Cuckoo etc.

“Qawwali Ki Raat” (1964) is a Durgesh Productions movie. It was directed by Durgesh Kumar and Santosh. This movie, which was clearly inspired from “Barsaat Ki Raat” has some lovely songs in it, which are great to listen to, even though the movie itself was a B grade movie with only small time actors in it, viz. Aruna Irani, Kamaljeet, Kumkum, Mumtaz, Deven Verma, Mohan Choti, Jagdeep, Murad etc in it.

Here is what Khyati Bhatt, a regular contributor to this blog, discovered recently. Like her, I too believe that this song has to be one of the most remarkable songs that Talat Mehmood has sung in his career. It is a twist of irony that a song as wonderful as this one should end up in obscurity whereas it deserves to be counted among the best known songs of Talat Mehmood.
