Hum bewafa hargiz na the

Posted on: October 21, 2008

The biggest bollywood hit of all time was “Sholay” that was released in 1975. This movie played on the same movie hall of Bombay for many years. When this movie was finally withdrawn, it was replaced by another movie, which was being so hyped those days that everyone felt it was going to be the biggest movie in Bollywood history, bigger than even “Sholay”. But when “Sholay” was finally replaced by thise movie whose title sounded similar, viz “Shalimar”, this movie “Shalimar” turned out to be the biggest damp squib in the history of Bollywood.

Despite this movie boasting some big desi names ( Dharmendra and Zeenat Aman) as well as some phoren names that few desi people knew about, the movie hardly had any storyline to keep the audience glued to their seats. It was as boring a movie as imaginable, and the movie flopped big time.

The only saving grace for this movie, and indeed the only silver lining was this particular song ” hum bewafa hargiz na the”. Considering that the movie had no storyline to speak of, even this song was a misfit in this movie, as were the other songs in this movie.

This song, despite becoming irrelevant in the context of the movie caught the imagination of the public, purely on the quality of its audio, and no thanks to its video. Kishore Kumar gave his best in this song, and the song became a roaring success, despite the failure of the movie. This song stood 4th in the Binaca geetmala 1979 finals.

So here is this fantastic song from a forgotten movie called “Shalimar” . If this movie “Shalimar” is still remembered today, then it is mainly because of this particular song.

Song- Hum bewafa hargiz na the (Shalimar) (1978) Singer- Kishore Kumar, Lyrics- Anand Bakshi, MD- R D Burman

hum bewfaa hargiz na the
par hum wafaa kar naa sake
humko mili uski sazaa
hum jo khataa kar naa sake
hum bewfaa hargiz na the
par hum wafaa kar naa sake

kitni akeli thi wo raahein ham jinpe
ab tak akele chalte rahein
tujhse bichhadke bhi o bekhabar
tere hi Gham mein jalate rahein
toone kiyaa jo shikwaa
ham wo gilaa kar naa sake
hum bewfaa hargiz na the
par ham wafaa kar naa sake

tumne jo dekhaa sunaa sach thaa magar
kitnaa thaa sach ye kisko pataa
jaane tumhe maine koi dhokha diyaa
jaane tumhe koi dhokha huaa
is pyaar mein sach jhooth kaa
tum faisalaa kar naa sake
hum bewfaa hargiz na the
par hum wafaa kar naa sake

beautiful song no doubt..:( tat d movie was a flop!

This song invariably appears in almost any playlist I try to create :). I believe Kishore had this uncanny talent of juicing out every emotion out of a song. Brilliant!
