Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Jaana kahaan hai

Posted on: November 28, 2008

This movie is known for Bappi Lahiri’s memorable music. This was the second move as a music director for Bappi Lahiri. If his music was good in Zakhmee ( “Jalta hai jia mera bheegi bheegi raaton me”), his music was even better, in fact outstanding in “Chalte Chalte”. Its theme song has become an iconic song.

Its other songs were good as well. Here is a song from this movie that goes”jaana kahan hai”. It is the first song in the movie as the movie begins. This song is sung by Bapppi Lahiri and Sulakshana Pandit where they try to do R D Burman and Asha Bhonsle, and do a decent job. Yes, Bappi Lahiri was definitely inspired by R D Burman’s musical style and that included singing songs in his voice too. It is just that he then succumbed to the temptation of composing blatantly plagiarised tunes and/on cheap songs in his future movies where lyrics were virtually dispensed with.

But that was into the future. As far as “Chalte Chalte” was concerned, it was Bappi Lahiri at his best. The lyrics written by Amit Khanna were top class as well.

“Chalte Chalte” was a movie which had a different kind of story. It was the kind of movie where the producers have tried very hard to secure an “A ” certificate for the movie, but failed in their attempt. Watch this video to see what I mean. The video shows Nazneen in Bikini and other such flimsy clothings throughout the song.

But as I said, it is a very nice song to listen to.

Song- Jaana kahan hai (Chalte Chalte) (1976) Singers- Bappi Lahiri, Sulakshana Pandit, Lyrics-Amit Khanna, MD- Bappi Lahiri
Lyrics

jaanaa kahaan hai
tu ru ru ru ru
pyaar yahaan hai
tu ru ru ru ru
duniyaa jawaan hai
tu ru ru ru ru
dilkash samaan hai
dilkash samaan hai
jaanaa kahaan hai
tu ru ru ru ru
pyaar yahaan hai
tu ru ru ru ru
duniyaa jawaan hai
tu ru ru ru ru
dilkash samaan hai
dilkash samaan hai
jaanaa kahaan hai

ru ru ru ru ru
tu ru ru ru
ru ru ru
chanchal aaj pawan hai
meethi-meethi si chubhan hai
ban ke ek lahar
man jhoom rahaa hai
chanchal aaj pawan hai
meethi-meethi si chubhan hai
ban ke ek lahar
man jhoom rahaa hai
jaanaa kahaan hai
tu ru ru ru ru
pyaar yahaan hai
tu ru ru ru ru
duniyaa jawaan hai
tu ru ru ru ru
dilkash samaan hai
dilkash samaan hai
jaanaa kahaan hai

ujaalaa hi ujaalaa
baadalon se phir aaj
chaand ne munh nikaalaa
bikhri chaandi ki maalaa
ujaalaa hi ujaalaa
baadalon se phir aaj
chaand ne munh nikaalaa
bikhri chaandi ki maalaa

jaanaa kahaan hai
tu ru ru ru ru
pyaar yahaan hai
tu ru ru ru ru
duniyaa jawaan hai
tu ru ru ru ru
dilkash samaan hai
dilkash samaan hai
jaanaa kahaan hai
tu ru ru ru ru
pyar yahan hai
duniyaa jawaan hai
tu ru ru ru ru
dilkash samaan hai
dilkash samaan hai
jaanaa kahaan hai
jaanaa kahaan hai
jaanaa kahaan hai
jaanaa kahaan hai

I have to admit to not being a big Bappida fan…disco is just not really my thing (esp. plagiarized disco!). But his earlier songs can be very nice and this one really is. Thanks for introducing me to it.

The movie “chalte chalte” is in fact known for Bappi Lahiri’s music. Many people like me thought that here was another R D Burman. But he let his fans down soon by coming up with those “disco” songs, typically picturised on Mithun Chakraborty.

Indeed Bappi Lahiri’s early songs, like this one, are so pleasant to listen to !!!
