“Asha” was a reasonably successful movie of 1980. It had many popular songs in it.
One song “Sheesha ho ya dil ho aakhir toot jaata hai” went on to become a surprisingly popular song and continues to be so. I am unable to understand the reason for its enormous popularity. This song was in fact number 3 in the Binaca geetmala final of 1980, that is how popular this song was.
Forget 1980, I listened to this song blaring from loudspeakers even yesterday, that is how popular this song is.
I think that the first line of the song, comparing sheesha ( glass) with heart and concluding that both are equally breakable, clicked with the public. There is no doubt that the lyrics of Anand Bakshi had more to it than just the opening line, but it was this opening line that clinched the issue for this song.
The song was picturised on Reena Roy, who plays the role of a stage singer and she sings this song on a , well stage. The spectators have among them, Jeetendra, who, on watching Reena Roy makes a double take, as he recalls watching her previously. Her troupe has among others the venerable Bhagwan dada.
Jeetendra’s companion is Rameshwari, and she is not amused on finding Jeetendra taking too much interest on Reena Roy.
So here is this song which has become an evergreen song with all sections of music lovers.

There is one more antara of this song which comes in the end (more of a sad version) Here too Anand Baksh shows his genius by playing with words… Koi lutt jaata hai, koi loot jaata hai…

I was always under the impression that this song was either from Sanam Teri Kasam or Ek Duje Ke Liye. My bad :). Pretty catchy though.
