Sheesha e dil itna naa uchhaalo

Posted on: January 19, 2009

I have listened to this song many a times. Considering the heavy duty word like “Sheesha e dil” in this song, I was under the impression that this must be a serious song. When I watched the picturisation of the song, I found that it was a fun song picturised on a beach.

A few girls are there on the beach and they tease a girl (clad in a sari which is obviously not the proper beach wear) and the sari clad girl starts singing this song. Who knows, she could even be the heroine of the movie, considering that she sings this song in the voice of Lata.

Now, singing a light hearted song using serious sounding words like “sheesha e dil” had me foxed all these decades. I wonder whay lyrics hasrat Jaipuri saab could have come up if he had to write a light hearted song in “Lage Raho Munna Bhai” ? Now this thought could keep me busy for hours.

The song is quite hummable, even though I was not fully able to understand why the lyricist needed to use such heavey duty words for such light songs. May be thinking about this would lead to some more hilarity that the lyricist may not have bargained for when he wrote this song.

Song-Sheesha e dil itna naa uchhaalo (Dil Apna Aur Preet Paraayi) (1960) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Hasrat Jaipuri, MD-Shankar Jaikishan

Lyrics

machalti-jhoomti thandi hawaayen kahti hain
tadapti maujon ki chanchal adaayen kahti hain
sanwaaro zulf ko kaali ghataayen kahti hain
ye bhigi-bhigi suhaani fazaayen kahti hain
tumhin se aaj tumhaari nigaahen kahti hain
tumhin se aaj tumhaari nigaahen kahti hain
o o o o
sheesha-e-dil itana na uchhaalo
sheesha-e-dil itana na uchhaalo
ye kahin toot jaaega, ye kahin phoot jaaega
sheeshaa-e-dil itana na uchhaalo

nazaare ho gaye qurbaan in nazaaron par
machalke aa gayin laharen bhi ab ishaaron par
adaa se tairte phirte hain ham to dhaaron par
karenge pyaar ka jaadu javaan bahaaron par
ye kahane aai hain sou machhaliyaan kinaaron par
ye kahane aai hain sou machhliyaan kinaaron par
o o o o
sheesha-e-dil itana na uchhaalo
sheesha-e-dil itana na uchhaalo
ye kahin toot jaayega, ye kahin phoot jaayega
sheeshaa-e-dil itana na uchhaalo
la la la la, la la la laa, la la la la, la la la laa
la la laa, la la la laa, la la laa, la la la laa

sambhaalo hosh ke dariya ka gahra paani hai
na doob jaao kahin bekhabar jawaani hai
jawaan bahaar kinaaron pe aani-jaani hai
zara khayaal rahe dil ajab nishaani hai
abhi to pyaar ki duniya tumhen basaani hai
abhi to pyaar ki duniya tumhen basaani hai
o o o o
sheesha-e-dil itna na uchhaalo
sheesha-e-dil itna na uchhaalo
ye kahin toot jaayega, ye kahin phoot jaayega
sheeshaa-e-dil itana na uchhaalo

Every song in this movie was great, even if the movie had nothing much to write about. “Andaz mera mastana …”, Ajeeb dastaan hai yeh …”, “dil apna aur preet parai …”, the lyrics are great, the music is wonderful. I don’t know if the movie was a hit in its time, but the songs are outstanding. Thanks for giving us this gem today.

Very nice song.
Nothing “heavy duty” about it though the term “sheesha-e-dil” sounds very Urdu-ish. 🙂

Actually Urdu language used to in lyrics in those days. Todays ppl. are used to slang (Tapori langauge) in Hindi songs n movies. This is basic fault of todays generation. Urdu is forgotten in Hindi movies n its replaced road-side slang(Tapori) .. very sad.

Nice song, I love all the songs of this film, specially “ajeeb daastaan hai yeh” for the lyrics and music and “andaaz tera mastana” (love how they say takaleena) for how it’s totally different kind of song (reminds me of Egyptian belly dancing songs).
