on:“Palkon ki Chhaon mein”(1977) was a movie starring Rajesh Khanna and Hema Malini. Despite boasting such big names, and despite a very nice storyline, the movie was a box office failure.
Those days Gulzar was at the peak of his lyrical prowess. He would mostly work with R D Burman, but here he got to work with Laxmikant Pyarelal. and what nice songs they created in this movie !
Like the movie, its songs too have been forgotten, but one cannot but love the songs of this movie if one gets an opportunity to listen to them.
I have posted the heart touching song “Daakiyaa dak laaya” from this movie earlier.
Here is another very nice song from this movie. This song “Ghunghtaa gira hai zara ghunghtaa uthaa de” is bound to touch the heart strings of the listeners.
It is sung by Lata and picturised on Hema Malini. What a gem of a song this is !

Song-Ghunghta gira hai zara ghunghtaa utha de..Koi mere maathe ki bindiya saja de(Palkon Ki chaaon mein) (1977) Singer-Lata, Lyrics- Gulzar, MD-Laxmikant Pyarelal
Lyrics
ho ho
ho o ho ho ho
ghunghta giraa hai zara ghunghta utha de re
ghunghta giraa hai zara
aankhon me raat kaa kaajal lagaake
main aangan me thande sawere bicchaa doon
aankhon me raat kaa kaajal lagaake
main aangan me thande sawere bichchaa doon
main aangan me thande sawere bichchaa doon
ke pairon me mehandi ki agni lagaa de re
koi mere maathe ki bindiya sazaa de
ghunghta gira hai zaraa

Thanks for this upload Atul. “Palkon…” was such a lovely film, beautiful music as you say, it’s got one of Kishore’s saddest songs (Ladkhadaane do mujhe hosh mein ruswaai hain). Pity about it failing mainly I suspect because that was Rajesh’s down period. One of his best performances in my opinion. And for once, a fairly authentic portrayal of village life in India. I understand though that it was very popular in the small towns and villages and the ‘dakiya’ song is the iconic postman song. Apparently ‘Palkon..’ inspired Benegal’s ‘Welcome to Sajjanpur’ that released in 2008 and got written about a bit in the papers because of the connection.

At first I did not recognise this song…till I heard “koi mere maathe..”.
That clicked immediately. I used to like this song a lot.
Very nice song.

Wow..Daakiya Daak Laya was from this same movie…I had heard that song so many time, but never knew which movie it was from.
This melody reminds me of the one from Lamhe too where the second Sridevi would sing in anticipation of Anil Kapoor’s love.
