Mohe bhool gaye saanwariyaa

Posted on: June 18, 2009

When I look at the list of songs from “Baiju Baawraa” (1952), my mind just boggles. There are so many songs in this movie, and every song is a timeless classic that is very well known even today. The creators of these songs, who were among the most talented people of all time in Bollywood history had excelled while creating these songs.

Shakeel Badayuni had come up with amazing lyrics in this movie, and this song is no different. It is said that Lata actually felt sentimental and started crying while recording this song.

This song, which was composed by Naushad and was picturised on Meena Kumari is an iconic song among iconic songs. What a gem !

Song-Mohe bhool gaye saanwariyaa (Baiju Baawra) (1952) Singer-Lata, Lyrics- Shakeel Badayuni, MD- Naushad

Lyrics

jo main aisaa jaanati
ke preet kiye dukh hoye
o, nagar dhindhoraa peetati
ke preet na kariyo koye

mohe bhool gaye saanwariyaa, bhool gaye saanwariyaa
mohe bhool gaye saanwariyaa, bhool gaye saanwariyaa
aawan kah gaye, ajahun na aaye
aawan kah gaye, ajahun na aaye
leeni na mori khabariyaa
mohe bhool gaye saanwariyaa, bhool gaye saanwariyaa

dil ko diye kyun dukh birhaa ke
tod diyaa kyun mahal banaa ke
dil ko diye kyun dukh birhaa ke
tod diyaa kyun mahal banaa ke
aas dilaa ke o bedardi
aas dilaa ke o bedardi
pher li kaahe najariyaa
mohe bhool gaye saanwariyaa, bhool gaye saanwariyaa

nain kahen ro-ro ke sajnaa
dekh chuke ham pyaar kaa sapnaa
nain kahen ro-ro ke sajnaa
dekh chuke ham pyaar kaa sapnaa
preet hai jhoothi, preetam jhoothaa
preet hai jhoothi, preetam jhoothaa
jhoothi hai saari nagariyaa
mohe bhool gaye saanwariyaa, bhool gaye saanwariyaa

The prominent tabla beats reveal that the song ‘mohe bhool gaye saanwaria’ from Baiju Baawra (1952) at your site is not original. Please always stick to the originals,as any variation or changes ruin the beauty and melody of the song.

Thanks for pointing it out. It is indeed not original. I always post originals. Posting non orginals is blasphemy as far as I am concerned. Now I have provided a link to the original.

This is a beautiful song, no doubt and I can understand why one would think that Lataji would have cried when recording this song — however, I’d lean to the contrary.

If one is aware of the rigors of recording a song in a studio the notion of emotions is a bit of a exaggeration. It’s simply too much hard work to actually get emotionally swayed by the lyrics or the music. Just another day in the Studio.

a singer could cry while singing for a variety of reasons, mostly because the sentiments expressed there might touch upon a personal/familiar incident, not necessarily identical but perhaps a . While I have no idea what went on Lata’s life during those times, I imagine those were some tough times for her (pardon me for speculation, pure and simple) at that stage in her career.

James ji,
What Krishna ji says has truth in it.
I can not say much about the above song making Lata cry,but in Lata’s case there is another incident of the same nature.
In the early 50s,may be 1952,Jankavi P.Savalaram wrote one Marathi song for Lata-“Kalpvriksha Kanyesathi lavuniya Baba gela…”.It was a song about Lata’s father Master Dinanath.
The wordings of the song are such that during recording of the song Lata broke down several times and it had to be re-recorded.It happened 10 times. Finally, recording was re-scheduled,but again the same thing happened.Lata used to become so emotional about her fater’s memories, that it was becoming a problem.
Ultimately, the song was recorded and it became an iconic song of Lata in Marathi.
So,it can happen !
