Dil wil pyaar vyaar main kyaa jaanoon re

Posted on: June 24, 2009

I have so far posted three songs from “Shaagird” (1967), but the most popular song of this movie was not one of them.

This song-“dil wil pyaar vyaar” was not only the most popular song of this movie, it was in fact the most popular song of the year. It had finished number 1 in Binaca geetmala final of 1968. 1968 was the year that I regard as the titanium year in the history of Bollywood movie music. To be the most popular song of the titanium year is a great achievement for a song.

Enjoy this song. The popularity of this song those days was unbelievable and I as a young kid at that time can vouch for its popularity. Even today, one TV serial pays tribute to its popularity by adopting the phrase “dil wil pyaar vyaar” as the title of that serial.

This song is sung by Lata and picturised on Saira Bano and Joy Mukherji. Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist and the lilting music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

rut-vut shaam-waam main kyaa jaanoon re
rut-vut shaam-waam main kyaa jaanoon re
jaanoon to jaanoon bas itnaa
ke main tujhe apnaa jaanoon re
dil-vil pyaar-vyaar main kyaa jaanoon re
dil-vil pyaar-vyaar main kyaa jaanoon re
jaanoon to jaanoon bas itnaa

I am not sure about other Indian languages, but it is quite common in Marathi to say things like “preet beet,” “chori biri,” or “ladu bidu.” I recall reading an interview with Lata Mangeshkar in which she mentioned that she was joking with Laxmikant and Pyarelal about it and they decided to make a song using such expressions. Also, since Lata Mangeshkar’s mother tongue is Marathi, she might have suggested the common Marathi expression “ayya!” in the song. That is just my guess.

It is common to use such phrases in Hindi as well.
