Mythological movies,Historical movies and Arabian nights movies were regarded as B grade movies in Bollywood till 1970s. But many of these movies were produced with good production values. And when it came to their music, the music was as outstanding as any A grade movies.
“Alladin and the wonderful lamp” (1952) was a so called B grade mythological movie starring Mahipal. In this movie one can see a very young and happy looking Meena Kumari too.
Here is a lovely song from this movie. It is sung by Shamshad Begam and Asha Bhonsle and the song is picturised as a dance song ( of sorts) on Meena Kumari and Urmila respectively.
Anjum Jaipuri is the lyricist. S N Tripathi is the music director of this movie.
Song-Sharma ke zaraa ae mast adaa (Alladin and the wonderful lamp) (1952) Singers-Asha Bhonsle, Shamshad Begam, Lyrics-Anjum Jaipuri, MD-S N Tripathi
Lyrics
sharma ke zaraa ae mast adaa
itna to bata dil toone hai kisko diyaa
sharma ke zaraa ae mast adaa
itna to bata dil toone hai kisko diyaa
palkon ke banaa ke dore dore
dil kisko pukaare chori chori
chehre se hataa zulfon ki ghataa
soorat to dikha gori gori
palkon ke banaa ke dore dore
dil kisko pukaare chori chori
chehre se hataa zulfon ki ghataa
soorat to dikha gori gori
soorat to dikha ae mast adaa
itna to bata dil toone hai kisko diyaa
sharma ke zara ae mast adaa
itna to bata dil toone hai kisko diyaa
hai jinki jawaani shole shole
andaaz bade hain bhole bhole
ham unpe maren ham unpe jiyen
nazron ne kahaa haule haule
hai jinki jawaani shole shole
andaaz bade hain bhole bhole
ham unpe maren ham unpe jiyen
nazron ne kahaa haule haule
nazron ne kaha duniya hai juda
hai pyaara mera dil hamne hai jisko diyaa
sharma ke zara ae mast adaa
itna to bata dil toone hai kisko diyaa
tere husn ko dekhe taara taara
tujhe chaand mila hai pyaara pyaara
jisne bhi tera deedar kiyaa
wo dil apna haara haara
tere husn ko dekhe taara taara
tujhe chaand mila hai pyaara pyaara
jisne bhi tera deedar kiyaa
wo dil apna haara haara
deedaar tera ae mast adaa
itna to bata dil toone hai kisko diyaa
sharma ke zara ae mast adaa
itna to bata dil toone hai kisko diyaa
baadal hain khushi ke chhaaye chhaaye
hansne ke zamaane aaye aaye
wo shokh nazar wo jaame jigar
ulfat ka maza laaye laaye
baadal hain khushi ke chhaaye chhaaye
hansne ke zamaane aaye aaye
wo shokh nazar wo jaame jigar
ulfat ka maza laaye laaye
ulfat ka mazaa duniya hai judaa
hai pyaara mera dil hamne hai jisko diya
sharma ke zara ae mast adaa
itna to bata dil toone hai kisko diyaa

It was actually a couple of songs from this film (especially Ho Sake To Dil Ke Badale) that started me off listening to old bollywood songs.I absolutely love this film’s music, and I’m very sad that I haven’t been able to find the film anywhere.
