Nukta cheen hai gham e dil
Posted on: April 17, 2010
I had not heard this ghazal from “Mirza Ghalib” (1954) earlier, though I had read about it. I heard it for the first time only just now. What a song it is ! The lyrics were written by Ghalib, one of the greatest shayars of Urdu literature, and the movie is of course based on his life. He was long gone by that time, but his poetry has been enlivened by the superb voice of Suraiyya and accompanied by just the right music composed by Ghulam Mohammad. Most people will never read the literary works of poets like Ghalib, but it is songs like this that will make laymen aware of the riches that a poet like Ghalib left behind for us to savour.
This song is a valuable masterpiece for music aficionados. The song a nicely composed and nicely picturised song. The song is picturised on Suraiyya herself as was the case for most of the songs sung by Suraiyya.

Lyrics
aa aa aa aa aa
aa aa aa aa aa
aa aa aa aa aa
aa aa aa aa aa
aa aa aa aa aa
nuktaacheen hai gham-e-dil
usko sunaaye na bane
usko sunaaye na bane
kyaa bane baat jahaan
baat banaaye na bane
baat banaaye na bane
nuktaacheen hai gham-e-dil
gair phirtaa hai liye yoon
tere khat ko bhi agar
gair phirtaa hai liye yoon
tere khat ko bhi agar
koi poochhe ke ye kyaa hai
to chhupaaye na bane
to chhupaaye na bane
nuktaacheen hai gham-e-dil
main bulaataa to hoon usko
magar ae jazbaa-e-dil
main bulaataa to hoon usko
magar ae jazbaa-e-dil
us pe ban jaaye kuchh aisi
ke bin aaye na bane
us pe ban jaaye kuchh aisi
ke bin aaye na bane
ke bin aaye na bane
nuktaacheen hai gham-e-dil
ishq par zor nahin
hai ye wo aatish Ghaalib
ishq par zor nahin
hai ye wo aatish Ghaalib
ki lagaaye na lage
aur bujhaaye na bane
aur bujhaaye na bane
nuktaacheen hai gham-e-dil
usko sunaaye na bane
usko sunaaye na bane

Lot of typing errors i the above post, so here goes again.
Aah ko chahiye ek umr asar hone tak
Kaun jeeta hai teri zulf ke sar hone tak
Hum ne maana ke tagaful na karoge lekin
khaak ho jaayenge hum unko khabhar hone tak
Aashiqui sabr talab aur tamanna betaab
Dil ka kya rang karun khun-e-jigar hone tak
gham-e-hasti ka asad kis se ho jizmal ilaaj
shama har rang me jalti hai sahar hone tak

This ghazal has been a favourite of all the singers. I know many persons, who were aware of only the Suraiya version, became completely floored when I just hummed KL Saigal’s version. Saigal’s Nukta cheen hai gham-e-dil from the film Yahudi Ki Ladki (1933) composed by Pankaj Mallik is out of this world. That also makes one bow to the genius Pankaj Mallik, who was himself a great singer-actor, but unhesitatingly promoted Saigal by composing some of his best songs.

Mr. Atul,
I was delighted to find the ghazals of “Mirza Ghalib”. As u r posting surraiya songs presently, i remembered this movie. Excellent compositons all of them. Have u heard the following ghazal in the same film sung by surraiya :
Aah ko chahiye ek umr asar hone tak
Kaum jeeta hai teri zulf ke sar hone tak
Hum ne maana ke tagaful na karofe lekin
khaak ho jaayenge hum unko khabhar hone tak
Ashiqui sabr talab aur tamanna betaab
Dil ka kya rang karun khun-e-jigar hone tak
gham hast ka asad kis se ho jizmal ilaaj
shama har rang me jalti hai sahar hone tak
As soon as i found these ghazhals i remembered this one. couldnt resist writing the whole ghazal.
