Chaand jaane kahaan kho gayaa

Posted on: July 20, 2010

Today, when I am looking at the list of old farmaishes that I have yet to comply, I came across this song “Chaand jaane kahaan kho gayaa”. When I listened to this song, I wondered how I had failed to post this song till today.

This song was a long pending farmaish of Lalitha. This song is sung by Rafi and Lata and it is picturised on Sunil Dutt and Meena Kumari. From the dress of Meena Kumari (silk sari worn in South India style), I guess that this movie is produced in South.

The song is such a lovely “chhaayaageet” kind of soft romantic song that is ideally suited for listening to at night time. Rajinder Krishan is the lyricist and Chitragupta is the music director.

What a wonderful song indeed !

Song-Chaand jaane kahaan kho gayaa (Main Chup Rahoongi) (1962) Singers-Rafi, Lata, Lyrics-Rajinder Krishan, MD-Chitragupta

Lyrics

chaand jaane kahaan kho gayaa
chaand jaane kahaan kho gayaa
tumko chehre se pardaa hataanaa na thaa
chaandni ko ye kyaa ho gayaa
chaandni ko ye kyaa ho gayaa
tumko bhi is tarah muskuraanaa na thaa
chaand jaane kahaan kho gayaa

pyaar kitnaa jawaan raat kitni haseen
aaj chalte huye tham gayi hai zameen
pyaar kitnaa jawaan raat kitni haseen
aaj chalte huye tham gayi hai zameen
tham gayi hai zameen
aankh taare jhapakne lagi
aankh taare jhapakne lagi
aisi ulfat kaa jaadu jagaanaa na thaa
chaand jaane kahaan kho gayaa
chaand jaane kahaan kho gayaa
tumko chehre se pardaa hataanaa na thaa
chaand jaane kahaan kho gayaa

pyaar mein bekhabar ham kahaan aa gaye
meri aankhon mein sapne se kyun chhaa gaye
pyaar mein bekhabar ham kahaan aa gaye
meri aankhon mein sapne se kyun chhaa gaye
kyun chhaa gaye
do dilon ki hai manzil yahaan
do dilon ki hai manzil yahaan
tum na aate to hamko bhi aanaa na thaa
chaandni ko ye kyaa ho gayaa
chaandni ko ye kyaa ho gayaa
tumko bhi is tarah muskuraanaa na thaa
chaand jaane kahaan kho gayaa
chaand jaane kahaan kho gayaa

Really!

I have to watch carefully from to see this difference in sariwear, south Indian and North Indian style. I know the gujaraatee style, which drapes the palloo onto the othe side, but you seem to imply there i ssomething moe than that.

Any thoughts, Lalitha (south indian?)

This movie was the remake of a Tamil movie called Kallathur Kannamma, with Gemini Ganesh and Savitri and Kamal Hassan as the child actor. I have no idea if it was made earlier in Telugu, as used to happen frequently in those days. As regards the sari style, I didn’t notice anything special to imply that it was worn South Indian style, other than the fact that it looks like a Mysore silk sari! I do know my saris, after all! The traditional South Indian style, as worn by my grandmothers, was worn in some other films, e.g. Padmini in Vietnam Veedu, and Sowcar Janaki in Edhir Neechal, as well as Sridevi in Meendum Kokila. Since I have not seen too many Tamil movies, esp in recent times, I cannot tell you about recent movies.

The flowers (jasmine–malli) are south indian style (though in the movies I see Madhubala and lots of others sport them). Saree, I don’t know. It is not S.Indian per se to me. Anyway I don’t know much about sarees and don’t remember the details in styling right off.

Which also brings up the question of the half-saree. They were popular in the south till recently (maybe even now) but in the movies I see Madhubala and others wear the half-saree. I’ve never seen a half-saree on a North Indian outside of that.

All I know about sari is that friends used to say “don’t select a girl for marriage if she in a sari”. They all look good in sari 🙂

Anyway, heard many times in past Mom talking about “Kanjeevaram” and “Banarasi” silk saris. Also, style were “seedha palla”. “ulta palla”, “Maharastrian” etc.

Coming back to song, in beginning it sounded like OP Nayyar music. As blogger said. “a perfect chaya-geet”, with or without lady in Silk sari. 🙂
