Ae maalik tere bande ham

Posted on: October 2, 2010

Here is a song that has gone on to become an iconic song. People know about this song, even though many people may not be aware of the details of this song.

This immortal song “Ae maalik tere bande ham” in fact became the school prayer of many schools. This song is in fact a movie song. It is from “Do Aankhen Baarah Haath” (1957), which was a V Shantaram movie starring V Shantaram and Sandhya, among others.

This song is sung by Lata and picturised on Sandhya and others.

Bharat Vyas is the lyricist and Vasant Desai composed the music.

This song is a bhajan, and a secular bhajan too. And this is a song whose immortality is assured. Kudos to the creators of this song.

I find it curious, but true that this song, so hugely popular then, as well as today, had failed to figure in the list of Binaca geetmala final list for the year 1956. It just goes on to show that even immortal songs often begin modestly, before aquiring their cult status over a period of time.

Song-Ae maalik tere bande ham (Do Aankhen Baarah Haath) (1957) Singer-Lata,V Shantaram Lyrics-Bharat Vyas, MD-Vasant Desai

Lyrics

aaa aaa aaa
ae maalik tere bande ham
aaa
aise hon hamaare karam
aaa
neki par chalen
aur badi se talen
taaki hanste huye nikle dam
aaa
ae maalik tere bande ham

badaa kamzor hai aadmi
aaa
abhi laakhon hain ismein kami
aaa
par tu jo khadaa
hai dayaaloo badaa
teri kirpaa se dharti thami
diyaa toone hamen jab janam
aaa
tu hi jhelegaa ham sabke gham
aaa
neki par chalen
aur badi se talen
taki hanste huye nikle dam
aaa
ae maalik tere bande ham
aaa aaa
aaa aaa
aaa aaa

jab zulmon kaa ho saamnaa
aaa aaa
aaa
jab zulmon kaa ho saamnaa
aaa
tab tu hi hamen thaamnaa
aaa
wo buraayi karen
ham bhalaayi bharen
nahin badle ki ho kaamnaa
badh uthe pyaar kaa har kadam
aaa
aur mite bair kaa ye bharam
aaa
neki par chalen
aur badi se talen
taaki hanste huye nikle dam
aaa
ae maalik tere bande ham

Easily one of my favourite songs.
Has been for the last 35 years.

there was also a male version in the movie

I remember the movie was shown on DD in 1975. In recent years I’ve often thought of it as Snow white and the seven dwarves–blanche neige et les sept nains. Just from the visuals.

The male version is a chorus wherein Lata’s voice is heard.
It is heard that it was sung as a prayer in some schools in Pakistan.

there are two versions of lata also, one begining with alaap and taana in between the verses
