Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

O chaand jahaan wo jaayen

Posted on: December 15, 2010

What a delightful song it is ! In this song, two ladies are singing about their beloved. I hope they are not singing about the same person, though knowing Hindi movies, a situation like this is not uncommon in Hindi movies.

The ladies are telling the moon to accompany their beloved wherever he goes and to convey the news of his well being to them. What a wonderful imagination on the part of the lyricist ! But then it is Rajinder Krishan who wrore this song. He had a gift for coming up with great original thoughts which he then used in his lyrics.

The song is sung by Lata and Asha Bhonsle and it is picturised on Meena Kumari and Shyama respectively.

C Ramchandra composed this wonderful tune which is based on Raag Hansdhwani.

This song is from “Sharda” (1957).

Song-O chaand jahaan wo jaayen (Shaarda)(1957) Singers-Lata, Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Rajinder Krishan, MD-C Ramchandra

Lyrics

o chaand jahaan wo jaayen
o chaand jahaan wo jaayen
tu bhi saath chale jaanaa,
kaise hain, kahaan hain wo,
har raat khabar laanaa,
o chaand jahaan wo jaayen

wo raah agar bhoolen,
aaa aaa aaa
wo raah agar bhoolen,
tu raah dikhaa denaa,
pardes mein raahi ko,
manzil ka pataa denaa,
hai pahlaa safar unkaa,
aur reet hain anjaanaa,
har raat khabar laanaa,
o chaand jahaan wo jaayen,
o chaand

kahnaa mere honthon par,
aaa aaa aaa aaa
aaa aaa
kahnaa mere honthon par,
rukti huyi aahen hain,
yaa rastaa unkaa hai
yaa rastaa unkaa hai
yaa meri nigaahen hain,
betaab muhabbat ka,
betaab hai afsaanaa,
o chaand jahaan wo jaayen,
o chaand

hai chaand qasam meri,
kuchh aur na tu kahnaa
hai chaand qasam meri,
kuchh aur na tu kahnaa
kahnaa ke meraa tum bin,
mushkil hai yahaan rehnaa
kahnaa ke meraa tum bin,
mushkil hai yahaan rehnaa
ek dard ke maare ko,
acchhaa nahin tadpaanaa,
har raat khabar laanaa,
o chaand jahaan wo jaayen,
o chaand jahaan wo jaayen,
o chaand

I love this song, for the lyrics as well as the music. As for the two ladies in question, both are asking the chand to follow Raj Kapoor!

So the situation is similar to the case in “Mere Mehboob” song where two ladies sing the praises of their Mehboob who is one and the same.

And welcome back !

For a very long time, I used to wonder how the other person knew exactly when to join in the song! It was many years before I understood how two people could be singing the same song when they were not facing each other!

Haha. I was never this curious.

I figured it out when my uncle fed me the story of these singers shrinking themselves and entering the radio to sing their songs! To be honest, though, I did try to peek into the innards of the radio to see if I could spot them, and then my mother enlightened me! Don’t blame me for being so naive, I was only 5 or 6 years old at the time!

@ lalitha: I used to wonder about that as well, till I realised that there is no easter bunny and santa claus doesn’t exist as well! 😉
sad realisations!

I like the tabla beats in this song which have been a sort of trademark of CR music – Parchain, Amardeep, Kavi…
