Kaise koi jiye zahar hai zindagi

Posted on: February 16, 2011

“Baadbaan” (1954) is a movie that had Ashok Kumar and Meena Kumar in lead roles. Few people remember this movie today, but this movie has some nice songs in it.

Here is a song from this movie that had two versions. The male version was sung by Hemant Kumar and it was picturised on Ashok Kumar. The female version was sung by Geeta Dutt and it was picturised on Meena Kumari.

Both versions make for superb listening. Indeewar is the lyricist and music was composed by Timir Baran and S K Pal.

Hemant Kumar version (on Ashok Kumar)

Geeta Dutt version (on Meena Kumari)

song-Kaise koi jiye zahar hai zindagi (Baadbaan) (1954) Singer-Hemant Kumar/Geeta Dutt,Lyrics-Indeewar, MD-Timir Baran-S K Pal

aayaa toofaan
aayaa toofaan
beqadar bewafaa
hai aasmaan

kaise koi jiye
kaise koi jiye
zahar hai zindagi
uthaa toofaan wo
uthaa toofaan
aas ke
sab bujh gaye diye
kaise koi jiye

baadal hain yaa dhuaan
aag lagi kahaan
jaltaa na ho kahin
meraa hi aashiyaan
angaare thhe
aansoo nahin wo
dil ne jo piye
kaise koi jiye
zahar hai zindagi
uthaa toofaan wo
uthaa toofaan
aas ke
sab bujh gaye diye
kaise koi jiye

taare naa jaanen
oonchaayi gagan ki
aankhen naa samjhen
gahraayi man ki
gahraayi man ki
taare naa jaanen

pyaase papeehe ne
aas thhi baandhi
pyaase papeehe ne
aas thhi baandhi
ud gaye baadal
aa gayi aandhi
gham ne jo chhedaa
dil ne hansi se
honth see liye
kaise koi jiye
zahar hai zindagi
uthaa toofaan wo
uthaa toofaan

Instead of ‘Naach ke sab bujh gaye diye’, it is ‘Aas ke sab bujh gaye diye’.

The MD of this song was S K Pal as per 78 rpm record of this song with me.

Just saw this post today. The lead in the film was Dev Aanad (Ashok Kumar was his friend). Very nice story. There is a synopsis available on Wikipedia. I saw the film in 1954. The other actress in the film was Usha Kiron. All four acted well.

There is a nice song by Asha Bhosle, picurised on Usha Kiron.

ठुकरा के तेरी दुनिया को

Further to my comments I made yesterday.

Bombay Talkies Studio was failing and the workers came together under the banner “Workers Own Enterprise” and produced this film Baadbaan.

I also found a poster of the film (www.cinestan.com). In the poster, Ashok Kumar gets the top billing followed by Dev Anand, Meena Kumari, Usha Kiron. In the poster, there is a big picture of Dev Ananad and small pictures of several actors.

Another poster lists names in the same order (Ashok Kumar first) but has a large picture of Usha Kiron and two small ones – Dev Anand and Gope.

Encyclopedia of Indian Cinema also lists the names in the same order (page 1994).
