Chhaayi ghataa bijli kadki

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

Here is another gem of a duet from the film Apna Haath Jagannath (1960). Three song from this movie are already discussed in these pages. This one is a fun filled duet by Kishore and Asha Bhosle. I had seen this song many years ago on Doordarshan in the Chitrahaar program. The words and the music was all lost from memory, just the visual of Kishore Kumar walking, and being followed by a lady in a car remained in the mind. Recently, browsing through YouTube, I chanced to see this visual as the thumbnail image, and lo, I found this lost friend once again.

Think of a college student, not too much well to do, being wooed and pursued by a rich female class fellow, driving a car no less. And the car being an Austin convertible, manufactured in England, shows the class and pedigree of the lady who is in pursuit. No wonder the boy wants to take a long walk, and get away from the college crowd that can be seen in the background, before jumping into the car. 😀 😀

And in the process, compel his lady friend to break out into a song, to convince her beau to ride with her. The response to her entreaties is some wise cracking lines, which appear very natural considering that the person in question is Kishore Kumar. There is reference to his own moneyless situation (kadki), the many problems and issues he is facing, and yet he says it is equally dangerous to be on foot or in the car. 😀

Just exactly as Atul ji has researched, the one being pursued gives in by the time 3rd antaraa starts (it is roles reversed this time around, but the timing is still impeccable). And hence, Kishore Kumar jumps into the car to sing the last antaraa with Saeeda Khan; and in process, probably also ensuring that they are far away from the college premises for being seen by other class mates.

The on screen picturization of this song is on Saeeda Khan and Kishore Kumar. And the song is played out in the typical style of Kishore Kumar, even if it a bit constrained by his standards. This song appears somewhat early in the movie, as the lead players are probably still studying, and in a jolly mood of romance while attending college. Still some time to go before the realities of life and the status issues between the rich and poor will make an appearance to bring the expected twists and turns to the story.

The lyrics are crafted by Kaifi Azmi, and the melody maker for this composition is SD Burman. Enjoy this light hearted teasing song between young lovers.

And the car is Morris Minor? Melodious song with Kishore Da’s famous doodling at the end! Good article by Sudhir. Congrats.

Arif Bhai

Thanks for your appreciation. 🙂

And yes, I could be wrong on the name of the car. Austin of that period looks similar (my uncle had one many years ago), but maybe somewhat larger than the car in this clip. Morris may be the correct identification.

This actress Sayeeda Khan and her daughter died. I believe her husaband (Brij) shot both of them.
