Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Zulfon ko hataa le chehre se

Posted on: June 25, 2011

I just realised two facts. One fact is that the hair of leading ladies in Hindi movies play an important part in Hindi movies, especially in songs. when the Hero needs to sing a song in praise of her, what are the things about her that he can mention? He will sing about her face- likening it to Chaand(Moon), he will sing about her eyes, likening them to deep lakes. Another important body part that find much mention in the paens that hero sings for the lady are her hairs, which are called “zulf” in Hindi song parlance and they are often likened to Ghata (viz black rain bearing clouds). Heroine being compared to moon, lakes, cloud ! Hindi movie lyricists must have paid enough attention in their geography classes, it would seem to me, at least when these geographical topics were being discussed.

The other fact that I have realised it the extent to which movie makers would go to show the similarity of lady’s relevant body parts with moon, lakes etc. When it comes to zulf, one would have to rub one’s eyes in disbelief. It is wigs (and often grotesque wigs) that cover the head of the lady and then the hero is supposed to sing the praises of this wig, describing it as zulf.

And I find, much to my surprise, that I had totally failed to open a tag called “zulf’ song in the blog so far. Now I have rectified the errors of my ways and the blog now boasts of a zulf song tag.

Here is a quintessential zulf song from a movie that is appropriately called “Saawan Ki Ghata” (1966). In this song, Manoj Kumar is singing about the wig, I mean zulf of Sharmila Tagore. The song is supposed to be a romantic song, which it is, but at the moment, I can only see the funny side of the zulf.

Here is this song from “Saawan Ki Ghata” (1966).It is sung by Rafi. S H Bihari is the lyricist. Music is coomposed by O P Nayyar. The lyrics of this song were sent to me by nahm.

Song-Zulfon ko hataa le chehre se (Saawan Ki Ghata) (1966) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-S H Bihari, MD-O P Nayyar

Lyrics(Provided by nahm)

zulfon ko hataa le chehre se
ho ho ho
aa ha ha
hone de
zulfon ko hataa le chehre se
thoda sa ujaala hone de
sooraj ko zara sharminda kar
munh raat ka kaala hone de
zulfon ko hataa le chehre se

ho jo mausam ko pata
yeh teri zulf hai kya
choom le maang teri
jhukke saawan ki ghataa
ho jo mausam ko pata
yeh teri zulf hai kya
choom le maang teri
jhukke saawan ki ghataa
zulf lehraaye
lehraa ke
baadal baney
jo bhi dekhe tujhe
tera paagal bane
aisa bhi nazaara hone de
zulfon ko hataa le chehre se
thoda sa ujaala hone de
sooraj ko zara sharminda kar
munh raat ka kaala hone de
zulfon ko hataa le chehre se

dekh naaraaz na ho
mere masoom sanam
main koi gair nahin
teri aankhon ki qasam
dekh naaraaz na ho
mere masoom sanam
main koi gair nahin
teri aankhon ki qasam
de ijaazat ke tere qadam choom loon
saath main bhi tere do ghadi jhoom loon
halka sa ishaara hone de
zulfon ko hataa le chehre se
thoda sa ujaala hone de
sooraj ko zara sharminda kar
munh raat ka kaala hone de
haay
zulfon ko hataa le chehre se

Ha ha…nice write-up. Indeed, “zulf” is a common romantic song thread and deserves its own tag.

I watch this song on youtube a lot. Not only do I like the song but it never fails to amuse me to see Manoj Kumar with all his mannerisms. 🙂 This song (as also songs of Patthar Ke Sanam) are good for this.

wonderful thoughts on Zulf covered with “chidiya ka ghosla”—- A K Hangal’s words in “Bawarchi” for the Bouffant (god knows how it is spelt) his daughter sports in the movie
