Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Saanwariya Oye Baansuriya Oye Bajaaye Gayo Re

Posted on: July 5, 2011

This song from “Subhadra” (1946) is extremely rare. This song is sung by Lata Mangeshkar. Pt Indra is the lyricist and music is composed by Vasant Desai.

The song is picturised on Lata herself. Yes, “Subhadra” (1946) is one of the rare movies where Lata acted and sang for herself. We all would have dearly loved to watch a song picturised on Lata herself.

The song itself is wonderful to listen to. I have no idea why this song is this rare. This song should have been among the lst of most well known Lata songs.

Here is this superb song from “Subhadra” (1946) for the listening pleasure of music lovers.

====[ Update – 06 Apr 2016 ] ====

A posting error happened today, which led to this update.

The earlier song “Gori Sudh Na Bisaar Piya Aayega”, got posted the second time today. It was an inadvertent mistake committed by yours truly. In the hurry to complete a post, I missed making the basic and very important check, whether the song is already posted. After the song was posted second time, Atul ji caught on to the error very quickly, as he was making updates to the ‘Songs by Movie Name’ page. We had an urgent email conference, and we came to agreement to let the second post “Piyaa Aayega… Gori Sudh Na Bisaar Piyaa Aayega“, stand. To preclude the situation that a song has been posted twice, we decided to change the song in this older post, and replace it with the other Lata solo song from the same film. That way, the stat counts will remain unchanged, and the duplicate situation would get addressed.

So I have proceeded ahead and made this change. The song in this particular post is now replaced with the other Lata solo song from this film – “Saanwariya Oye Baansuriya Oye Bajaaye Gayo Re”. And in the process, I discovered for myself, an absolutely wonderful gem of a song, that actually merits a new write up for itself.

I had not heard this song before. On hearing it for the first time today, I have simply fallen head over heels, for this song. This is such a lovely expression of the naughty pastimes of the child Krsna, in Gokul and Vrindavan. The stories of the legendary relationship between the Gopis and child Krsna have been told many times over, across the centuries and across the histories. The ‘rasa’ (nectar) of these stories is a level of beauty that is beyond complete comprehension and expression. One can spend many a lifetime pursuing these discourses, and yet they will never be completely told.

This song is a very small expression of those pastimes. In the voice of a very young Lata, the song takes on a such a lovely manifestation of the episodes of mischievous child Krsna. Lata ji was just about 16 or 17 years old, when this song would have been recorded. Listening to the primeval tones of her voice in this song is a different world of experience altogether. The sounds are so appropriate for the topic that this song is addressing. These sounds are something to immediately fall in love with. The pranks of a child prankster, told by another child in the tones of a child’s voice, fresh and untaught. Listening to this song from seven decades ago is worth the lifetime we have waited for. Such is the enticement of the stories of the naughty child Krsna, such is the allure of the young and inexperienced voice of Lata. Together, they make a treat of the lifetime.

Listen and enjoy.

Atul ji,
SUBHADRA (1946) was a Prafull Production film, produced and directed by the famous MASTER VINAYAK( Nanda’s father).Composer was Vasant Desai and songs were written by Pt.Indra (Dialogues also),Pt.Sudershan and Moti,B.A.( His full name was Motilal Sancheti, but he used to flaunt his B.A. degree,as in those days graduates were found less in film industry).
The story and screenplay was written by the First Marathi Dnyanpeeth award winner,V.S.Khandekar.
The cast included, Prem Adib (Krishna),Dada Salvi (Balram),Shanta Apte (Subhadra),Ishwarlal (Arjun),V.S.Jog (Duryodhan) and Lata Mangeshkar as Subhadra’s Sakhi-dear friend.
Others were Damuanna Malawankar,minaxi,Yakub,Damodar,Shantarani etc.
The story was, Balram wants to marry his sister to Duryodhana, but Krishna wants her to wed Arjuna-his friend. He cunningly manages to facilitate Arjuna to kidnap Subhadra in the guise of an Yogi and then after revealing the identity, marry her.She also loves him.
Lata M. had not much of a role, except singing above song. There is also one duet of Shanta Apte and Lata Mangeshkar(the only duet of both),
“Main khili khili Phulwari”.
The 122 minute film was a Hit in those days.

Thanks a lot for the interesting information Sir, hats off to your generosity and knowledge. Audiences were always attracted to devotional and mythological films (that includes me!). Iam so happy to know that this was a hit, I had the inkling though. Shanta Ji’s songs are so wonderful, I think they must have definitely become famous. We would have certainly loved to see her as Subhadra and Prem Ji as Krishna. It would be very interesting to see Lata Ji as a singer – actress too.

Thanks to Atul Sir for the lyrics – saves me the confusion that may arise trying to write them:)

Atul ji,

What a find, and what a treat. This is a wonderful song.
Thanks for posting

Rgds

Dear All,

I draw your attention to the change made in this post.

The earlier song “Gori Sudh Na Bisaar Piya Aayega”, got posted again on 06 Apr 2016. To sort out the duplicate situation, we decided to replace the song in this post with another solo song from Lata ji, from the same film.

This song is a wonderful gem in its own right. I draw your attention to please visit this post also, and listen to another delectable Lata song.

Thanks and regards
Sudhir
