Tum laakh chhupaanaa chaahoge

Posted on: August 16, 2011

In his earlier days,Shammi Kapoor used to ape the mannerisms of Raj Kapoor, his elder brother and a successful hero of those days. But Shammi Kapoor finally found his calling when he developed his own style which helped him carve a unique niche for himself.

The movies of the two brothers also shared a few more things. For instance, majority of movies of both brothers had music composed by Shankar Jaikishan. But while the music directors and the lyricists remained the same for both the brothers, the playback singer would be different. For Raj Kapoor, it was Mukesh, and for Shammi Kapoor, it was Rafi. And Shankar Jaikishan created immortal music in both the cases. It definitely speaks very highly of Shankar Jaikishan’s ability to be flexible and adaptable.

What about the leading ladies of the two brothers. did they share any leading ladies in their movies ? I have not done any detailed research, but I guess (which could be wrong too) that there have been very few leading ladies that the two brothers have in common. The only such names I can think of are Padmini and Vyjyanti Mala. There may be more and I request our knowledgeable readers to point those names too.

The first (and to my knowledge the only ) time that Shammi Kapoor paired up with Padmini was in “Singapore” (1960). “Singapore” (1960) is a movie that I do not know much about, but it is safe to assume that the songs are nice to listen to, and that is indeed the case.

Here is a lovely duet from this song. It is sung by Rafi and Lata and it is picturised on Shammi Kapoor and Padmini. Hasrat Jaipuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by Shankar Jaikishan.

The lyrics of this song were sent to me by nahm.

Song-Tum laakh chhupaanaa chaahoge (Singapore) (1960) Singers-Rafi, Lata,, Lyrics-Hasrat Jaipuri, MD-Shankar Jaikishan

Lyrics(Provided by nahm)

Tum laakh chhupaana chaahoge
par pyaar chhupaa na paaoge
kachche dhaage se bandhe
sarkaar chale aaoge
sarkaar chale aaoge

tum laakh jataana chahoge
par pyaar jataa na paaoge
dil ko thhame haathon se
khaamosh chale jaaoge
khaamosh chale jaaoge

tum laakh chhupaana chaahoge
par pyaar chhupaa na paaoge
kachche dhaage se bandhe
sarkaar chale aaoge
sarkaar chale aaoge

tumhaare chehre ki rangat to
ye bataati hai
kisi ki yaad tumhen har ghadi sataati hai
ye uljhe baal mohabbat ka raaz kehte hain
kamal se nain khayaalon mein doobe rehte hain
tumhaari chaal mein shokhi hai aur sharaarat hai
zaroor tum ko kisi na kisi se ulfat hai
lo raaz khul gayaa
ab kis liye chhupaate ho
zamaana jaan gayaa
ham ko kyun banaate ho
tum laakh chhupaana chaahoge
par pyaar chhupaa na paaoge
kachche dhaage se bandhe
sarkaar chale aaoge
sarkaar chale aaoge

tum laakh jataana chahoge
par pyaar jataa na paaoge
dil ko thhame haathon se
khaamosh chale jaaoge
khaamosh chale jaaoge

tumhaare honton pe har baat kaanp jaayegi
lagi ye dil ki zubaan par kabhi na aayegi
bataoo kaise jataaoge pyaar phir apna
na hoga poora kabhi aarzoo ka ye sapna
tumhen ye pyaar ki hasrat bahut sataayegi
kabhi rulaayegi tum ko kabhi hansaayegi

gulon ki qaid mein khushboo to ruk nahin sakti
isi tarah se mohabbat bhi chhup nahin sakti
tum laakh chhupaana chaahoge
par pyaar chhupaa na paaoge
kachche dhaage se bandhe
sarkaar chale aaoge
sarkaar chale aaoge
tum laakh jataana chaho ge
par pyaar jataa na paao ge
dil ko thhame haathon se
khaamosh chale jaaoge
khaamosh chale jaaoge

The songs of this film were new for me too, as i had never heard them. This duet is a bit different from S-J usual songs, somewhat like O.P.N duets. Event the other Rock n Roll song, is excellent, compared to the more popular such songs.
