Tu shokh kali main mast pawan

This article is written by Sudhir,a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

‘Main Suhaagan Hoon’ is a better known movie from 1964. Produced by Nayyar Films, Bombay, it is directed by Kundan Kumar. The star cast includes Mala Sinha, Ajit, Nishi, Kewal Kumar, Nazir Hussain, Tewari, Indira Bansal, Najma, Chand Burk, Daya Devi, TN Sinha etc.

This song has two versions, viz a duet version sung by Rafi and Asha and a lovely solo song by Rafi Saab.

The lyrics are by Kaifi Azmi, and the music composition is by Lachhiram. In the picturisation of the solo song, the song is being performed by a young man whose identity I am not certain about. Given the star cast, this could be Kewal Kumar, but I am not certain. I would request our knowledgeable readers to please confirm and/or add more information.

The song itself is a wonderful semi classical composition. In the video clip, also visible are Nazir Hussain, and Mala Sinha. The setting is homely and seems as if two classical musician have met. The younger one seems to be a guest, and has been requested to present a song. Nazir Hussain is playing a sitar, and the younger one is playing the taanpura. Mala Sinha is in the kitchen when she hears the singing, and from her reactions, it is clear that she recognizes the voice. The manner in which she makes way from the kitchen to the living room, there is definitely a prior story between the two. It seems that the two have met after a gap of sometime and from the reactions of Mala Sinha on hearing this song again, indicates that all had not been well in the interim. Once again, requesting the knowledgeable readers to please contribute and describe the situation.

The first instance of this song in the movie is in the form of a duet. As of now, only the audio version of the duet is available, but it may be safe to assume that it is picturized on Mala Sinha and the young man we are trying to identify. This version maybe represents earlier and happier times, when the two would have been romantically involved.

Lachhiram (full name Lachhiram Tamar) is a music director who may not be well known now, but he was a well known composer in the industry from late 1940s to 1960s. Recall the memorable duet from Razia Sultana (1961) ‘Dhalti Jaaye Raat Keh Le Dil Ki Baat’ (also posted on this blog). This movie itself has more songs that were popular in their time.

Enjoy this lovely semi classical creation by him, rendered so wonderfully by Rafi Saab and Asha ji. Links for both solo version (video) and the duet (audio) are provided below.

huye tum meharbaan
phir dil ke saare taar tharraaye
mere roothhe huye sab geet
sab nagme palat aaye
tu shokh kali
main mast pawan
tu shamm-e-wafaa main parwaana
gulshan gulshan mehfil mehlfil

tu shokh kali
main mast pawan
tu shamm-e-wafaa main parwaana
tu shokh kali

meri pehli pyaas hai tu
aas hai tu vishwaas hai tu
tab se dil ne dhadaknaa seekha
jab se dil ke paas hai tu
man bhi tera
man bhi tera
tan bhi tera

dil ko dil pehchaan gayaa
pyaar ke baaten maan gayaa
neechi aankhen kyaa kehti hain
main be-jaane jaan gayaa

Sudhir ji,
The young man in the video is KEWAL KUMAR who has also acted in Mere humdum mere dost,Mere sajna and Pyar ke Bandhan etc.
MAIN SUHAGAN HOON (1964) was a typical indian movie stressing the importance of Suhaag in our life.
The story is Shanti(M.Sinha) and Ajit(Ajit) get married and settle in life with Ajit’s step mother and step brother Gopal-who is given lot of love by Shanti.Ajit,a captain in the Army is called on the border for Indo China war and is reported missing.
Shanti is branded as unlucky,as her Father in law had died at engagement time and now the husband has gone. She leaves house and comes to Mamaji(Nazir Hussain) who teache music to an orphan Kewal (Kewal Kumar).Kewal loves Shanti, who is waiting endlessly for her husband(Suhag).
There are subplots of the village sethji, his munim, and daughter Asha, who wants to marry Kewal.
All the jhamela is clear when Ajit comes back from the front, but not before sad songs, rona dhona etc.
Lachchiram Tomar was a composer in the late 40s and early 50s.He has given music to about 15 films, like,Shalimar,Badnami,Guru Ghantal,Mohini,Bhagat singh(54),Champa,Guru Dakshina,Ameer,Razia Sultan etc.

Is he the same Kewal Kumar who produced and directed MERE SAJNA? I was not aware of Kewal Kumar as an actor.

Kamath ji,
Yes,he is the same Kewal kumar who produced and directed Mere Sajna.
Another producer/director Jugal kishore also had a penchant for acting in his own films. You will find him in almost all of his films doing some sizeable role.Initially,he had done even Hero’s roles.
This is not a new thing in hindi films.
Yet another example is Tara Harish, who did Hero’s roles initially and then started directing films, but continued acting, but cameos only.
