Pyaase huye nain sulag gayi shaam

Posted on: September 28, 2011

When the movie is called “Afsaana”, one expects to see the famous movie starring Ashok Kumar. This movie is called Afsaana, and Ashok Kumar is in it, but it is not that famous movie of 1951, which was the original movie that had identical twin brothers as well as “separated in the mela” relatives. 🙂 This “Afsaana” in contrast is a movie of recent vintage and it hardly troubled the box office much. Apart from Ashok Kumar figuring in both movies, “Afsaana” (1951) and “Afsaana” (1966) have little in common.

True to my habit of guessing the story by its songs, I watched this song from “Afsaana” (1966) whose lyrics were sent to me by Prakashchandra. The clip begins with Ashok Kumar discussing a woman with Pradeep Kumar who is in the habit of wandering on moonlit nights. So it is a female ghost singing at night, I guess. As if to confirm my hunch, the song begins, with lyrics conforming to the requirements of a haunting pyaasi aatmaa song, and we see a lady singing this song in a distance. Aah, another female ghost wearing a white sari, I chuckle.

But then the lady is shown in closer view, and I see that she is not wearing white, but yellow. Oh, so the dress code of female ghosts in Hindi movies is getting amended ? And then another unusual thing happens. The face of the lady is revealed in closeup ! It is Padmini ! And she is seen wearing full makeup, including red lipstick. I never saw a female ghost wearing a red lip stick before.

By now, my theory of this being a haunting song is getting torn to shreds. If does not look like a bhootiya song at all. Then what exactly is going on ?

Some internet search reveals that this story is more like Goldilock and the bear rather than “Kohra”. The lady finds herself in the estate of a misogynist viz.Pradeep Kumar. Ashok Kumar, a fugitive from justice, had also arrived at this estate earlier. And Pradeep Kumar, for reasons not satisfactorily explained, had let both of them stay in his palatial home.

The presence of Jagdeep in the song is explainable more convincingly, though. He plays the man servant of Pradeep Kumar.

Instead of taxing one’s mind on understanding the storyline, it is better to just listen to the song and be done with it. 🙂 So just take the easy way out and listen to this song. The song is written by Majrooh Sultanpuri and the music is composed by Chitragupt.

On the occasion of her 83rd birthday, we on this blog wish Lata jee a very happy birthday and many happy returns of the day.

Song-Pyaase huye nain sulag gayi shaam (Afsaana) (1966) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-Chitragupta

Lyrics(Provided by Prakashchandra)

Pyaase huye nain
sulag gayee shaam
jab jab honthho se lagaa hai tera naam
pyaase huye nain
sulag gayee shaam
jab jab honthho se lagaa hai tera naam
pyaase huye nain

yaad teri aayee to khwaab ye dikhaayaaa
door hi se chhoo raha hai tan ko tera saaya
yaad teri aayee to khwaab ye dikhaayaaa
door hi se chhoo raha hai tan ko tera saaya
uski bujhe aag kahaan
jisko pada teri yaad se kaam
pyaase huye nain
sulag gayee shaam
jab jab honthho se lagaa hai tera naam
pyaase huye nain

chaandni mein khoyee
pukaarti hain baahein
pyaas meri baadlon mein
dhoondhti hain raahein
chaandni mein khoyee
pukaarti hain baahein
pyaas meri baadlon mein
dhoondhti hain raahein
uski mite pyaas kahaan
jisko pada teri yaad se kaam
pyaase huye nain
sulag gayee shaam
jab jab honthho se lagaa hai tera naam
pyaase huye nain

This movie has been directed by Brij Sadanha, who directed Hit massala movies like Night in london, Victoria no. 203(1972),Tu nahin aur sahi, Ustadon ke ustad(1963),Nayee Raahein(1959),Chori mera Kaam(shashi kapoor starrer), Yakeen(Dharmendra starrer), Ye raat Phir na aayegi(1966),Katputli(Jeetendra starrer)Do Bhai(1969-jeetendra starrer),Ek se Badakar ek(Raj kumar, sharmila tagore starrer),Bombay 405 miles,Professor Pyarelal.

All above movies have PUCCA masala potboilers.

I think Brij`s real life also appears like his movies, because he shot dead himself.

You have written Padmini`s name as Kalpana.
In the movie KALPANA, Padmini was there. But here it should be mentioned as PADMINI.
